Re: Questionable tag lines & shiny footprints
Ever I bought my first Spyderco more than a decade ago I've never carried any other knife If it wasn't for muscle memory I wouldn't even know I was carrying a knife half the time with how light many are. I've beat on and abused some of them in the name of testing and shared the outcome on the forums...

So what's the top contender for all around "super steel" these days?
Back when I first got into knives M390 with CTS 204P were both highly regarded as perhaps the ideal blend of amazing corrosion resistance, top tier edge retention yet also quite tough, Though S110V was king as far as edge retention as far I remember while also being absurdly corrosion resistant, whi...

Re: Let's talk pocket wear...
All I can say is DON'T weld. I wish my jeans lasted long enough for pocket wear :rofl. That being said, the type of scales are going to make the most difference, though certain clips will make it worse, a nice coarse G10 military is going to eat your pockets up compared to FRN or especially anything...

Yep, I got one with my replacement Manix 2, went right on the side of my welding hood, first sticker to go on it. Hopefully it'll stay on.

Re: Polished Edge: When, Why, What Steels??
I usually went for about 1,000 grit on knives I knew Id be sharpening a lot due to the high chance of them experiencing metal on metal contact. However I did always go for polished mirror or near mirror edges on less carried knives, it was for the challenge as much as anything. Try polishing s110v ...

Re: Liner lock. Should I try one?
I'd argue the Military might be the exception, it has a very aggressive liner lock that really feels like it "bites in" for lack of a better word. While other liner locks might feel more like that simply slide into the open space, the Military's liner jams itself in there. Unless you spine...

I guess I need to get a blade in m2 or possibly m4 then, it's simply inevitable.

Re: Knives you wanted to dislike but ended up loving
Lightweight Manix 2 is S110V. Despite it appealing enough to me that I bought one, my original thought was that someone thought hey you know all those hard use knives out there? Lets literally make the opposite. So to get over my fear of carrying it, I decided to actually put it through it's paces, ...

Re: Affording the Necessary Stones for Super Steels
One way or another, with all these carbide rich super steels, diamond is the way to go. Some steels literally require diamond or something harder than alumina ceramic, but even if you own nothing more exotic than VG-10 diamond is always going to be the fastest option. However, the Ken Onion workshop...

That's very generous of Spyderco! I remember reading and re-reading that old thread, sbaker345, when I was considering buying S110V. Great stuff! Not many folks are willing to push the extremes, but those that do provide invaluable information to the industry and the community. Thanks! I ult...

Re: I can tig weld!
That broken drill bit you used as filler was probably M2. I used to demonstrate to my coworkers the durability of my m2 bladed knife by hacking the corner of the mild steel welding table, leaving deep marks in the table, and nothing on the blade. Them doing the same thing with their knife would rol...

Re: Affording the Necessary Stones for Super Steels
Speaking of, what does the finish of a well used CBN or diamond stone look like anyhow? It's been a long time since I've had either and I'm curious if I'd be satisfied with 400 grit or not.

For the purpose of weapon lights, cloud defensive is entirely USA made and overbuilt in every single way that matters the bezel itself is made out of heat treated S7 tool steel. I'm searching for a decent every day use light myself, rechargeable, multiple brightness settings. Ideally with a form fac...

Re: Affording the Necessary Stones for Super Steels
Ankerson, and probably some new member's have likely long sense rewritten the "book" on sharpening super steels I felt like my extensive testing of s110v did by learning how to sharpen it well enough I could comfortably shave my face with it. The other posters however are spot on, with sta...

I can tig weld!
And very few or you will or should care, but for the .01% who might be intrigued. You can get various tool steels, several you might recognize from the knife world as filler rod. A2, D2, S-7 tool steel, M2 to name a few. They're not cheap, a pound of rod would run me about 50-60 dollars, but turning...

Re: 2021 Multi-tool Review
I have to admit the last multitool I carried was the Leatherman Charge TTI, I liked the fact that it had an actual knife blade, and of course 99% of the time it would be the driver bit part of it I'd use, eventually I got tired of the weight and on it went.

Re: It's back, with a twin.....
I've spent pretty much all day wishing I could've put some m390, ct204 or 20cp. Reason being is on paper they're superior steels to s110v. Nearly as good edge retention, slightly easier to sharpen, that much I agree with but their touted toughness makes s110v look like brittle glass. I wonder how it...
