Re: We don't actually need to Magnacut *all* the knives

M390 does have better edge retention according to Larrin's chart: Larrin's chart is not for true "edge retention", though that is the term he uses. It is really for "edge abrasion resistance", since it uses CATRA, and all the CATRA machine tells you is resistance to edge abrasio...

Re: Temporal Edge Retention

Here is my hypothesis. I don't believe it possible for the shape of an apex to change sitting idly over time. 1. you sharpened the chaparral very well, either by luck, or b/c XHP is easy to sharpen and propely debur. 2. on another knife, you left a small burr, but the burr was straight so the knife ...

Re: We don't actually need to Magnacut *all* the knives

] the only knife I'll probably have in MC is a custom Santoku I'm having made. Good choice. I think kitchen use is actually the ideal place for Magnacut to be the steal (spelling intended) to rule all steels, more than EDCs, where you could argue for a lot of different steels depending on use case....

What's wrong with LC200N, however judging from the delay, perhaps Vanax.

Re: We don't actually need to Magnacut *all* the knives

... I honestly wonder if I'd be able to tell much of a difference from something like CPM S30V/S35VN. I suspect that these steels will be far more similar than they are different. . I honestly disagree. I've now got a folder in Magnacut HT to 62-63, and it is so much different to S30V. I've had min...

Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?

a little off topic, but today I noticed how similar S30V and Magnacut are in their composition: S30V and Magnacut are the same in: -Vanadium: 4% -Molybdenum: 2% -Nitrogen: 0.2% They differ slightly in: -Carbon: S30v 1.45% -> 1.15% in Magnacut They differ significantly in: -Chromium: S30V 14% -> 10.7...

Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?

I think we will see lots of Magnacut kitchen knife options popping up over the next five years, from at least. a dozen factories. Bradford Knives did a run of their culinary line in magnacut. Not nearly factory production quantities, but it's a start! I think Magna-Cut might be a bit hard to grind ...

Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?

Got my plain edge Magnacut Native in the mail today, This thing is gonna be my go to work knife in the kitchen Out of curiosity, why would you not have a dedicated kitchen knife in the kitchen? something like an 8" chef, or 165mm Santoku or Bunka in stainless Gingami (aka G3, or Silver3?). or ...

I think it suffers fundamentally with the blade stock being too thick.
. I agree with this. I also think there has been a general shift away from large spidey hole hump in a blade shape. So you have Native 5 with a narrower blade stock and less humpy/rampy profile.

Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?

Guys, I also ordered a Hogue Deka Magnacut with frn scales while I was waiting for this Native 5. Should receive it tomorrow or the next day. Have any of you also ordered the Deka because you just wanted SOMETHING in Magnacut while waiting for the PE Native 5 to drop? If so, did you like it? My plan...

Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?

Incidentally, one of the things that has resulted in my research on Magnacut is an unexpected appreciation for LC200N based on lots of reviews and user experiences. It is tougher than MC, more corrosion resistant but probably not meaningfully so, and easier to sharpen per just about everybody. Appar...

Anyone want to hazard a guess on the HT? I'm guessing 62, with lesser odds on 61 or 63.

Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?

thanks for the heads up guys. I also just ordered from GP Knives, then called Knife Center to cancel my pre-order.

I suppose now I am going to have to buy some black Ritt dye, or some blue Ritt if I want a dark forest green.

Re: Corrosion Reports

After I wasn't able to put a patina on my Rex 45 Manix, even after cutting fruits with it, I really was surprised, how corrosion resistant Rex 45 seems to be for me. FYI Rex45 is also called HAP40, which is quite common in some expensive hand made Japanese kitchen knives. I think they are usually s...
