Re: Scale making questions, epoxy etc
The West System "G-Flex" is used a lot for this type of bond. Surface prep is very important. Scratch the surfaces with sand paper & keep them flat, clean with a solvent & then clamp to get things right. Sounds like a good plan you have. Fiber liner material, G10, Micarta or anythi...

Another based on the same design as above. Really enjoying this & doing a bit better with practice. This is 1095 & some locally grown Ironwood. Really like working with this wood, but it's a booger to mill & stinks pretty badly. Still, nice when it's buffed out with a coat of wax. http:/...

Computer woes & cheap fix
Our computer sits in the back room, which is the office, laundry, cat litter area for a mentally challenged feline & general use area in our small home. The computer has become more & more quirky. Mouse not working & tracking properly, slow, acting weird at times & generally behaving...

Re: D2 steel question
No for food prep. Yes for common sense here. Mineral oil for food prep, as was already mentioned. A "work knife" which is used in the shop or outdoors doesn't get used for food prep with our use. A food prep knife isn't used for chopping outdoors. The D2 food knife in the trailer is just w...

Re: D2 steel question
D2 gets a bad rap in general. It's very good steel when used properly. Not nearly as rust-prone as simple carbon steel, so a bit of care is all you need. I typically use wd 40 for my stuff like this. Cheap & easy, but there's nothing like a bit of prevention after using a blade (rinse or clean w...

Re: Ear Protection
Cheap foam earplugs work very well. Roll them into a narrow cylinder & quickly stuff them into the ear canal. Hold them in place until they expand. Cuts out sounds almost completely once they expand.

Re: Snakes: Your encounters with them and your opinions?
A while ago, couple of years taking pictures in the early spring. Nice cactus blooms, so I had to get close for the shot. http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x331/Tim_Curry/3-22-PLSnaleShads_zpso46gcze5.jpg Then I realized what I was squatting over. Fortunately it was early morning after a cold nigh...

Re: Opinions on .380 for my wife
I would take her out & shoot lots of different ones first. Then see which one she shoots best & buy that. Chuck's suggestion of the 22 mag is also a good one. I think a laser sight is too "fiddly" in a close combat situation, not necessary, bulky & time consuming when there may...

A muleish cousin?
I'm making a few knives now & just wanted to show a progressive "clone" of the Mule Team I've made. It's the second iteration of this design, since the first was a bit on the "chunky" side & needed some refinement. This one is 9" X 1/8" X 1 1/2" D2 with the...

Re: Which Steels would you call non-stainless
D2 is right on the edge of being called a true stainless also, but with the high carbon content, the chrome is used up in combining with the carbon & the result is a blade which can rust in the wrong conditions. It's sort of like ZDP in this respect. The chrome is used up by the carbon. My Super...

Re: .22LR rifle recommendations?
Savage MKII is ok, but somewhat spotty on QC & barrel quality, some shoot really well, others, not as good. Cheap, can be made into other things a with a bit of effort. A threaded barrel is nice to have from the factory, just sayin'.... http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x331/Tim_Curry/FinRSS_z...

Re: American Steel Production Question
Not very likely to happen in today's political climate, as was said already about pollution & regulation. We lost our steel making due to foreign competition many years ago, but also due to a system of antiquated mills which were not able to compete. Our mills were "state of the art" w...

Try Danish oil & wet sand from 220 up through 800 grit paper. Wipe each coat & let dry completely before changing grits. After the 800 is dry, use a small amount of oil & rub it into the wood, wipe it off, let it dry & then do again. Takes a lot of time but gives a nice, deep finish....

Re: Let's talk about pistol holsters...
The stuff I make is sealed with a wax product from Tandy which soaks into the leather, then dries. Once it's buffed out, it gets a coating of sno seal & gets warmed up to cure a bit. This is buffed out & it seals up the leather pretty well. I always cut my holsters with a "sweat shield&...
