I live in a state that repealed essentially all of its knife restrictions a few years ago (thank you, Representative Coffey), and I still like this design quite a bit. Maybe it's just a novelty and/or collecting issue, but I picked up two of them. Another, more practical reason to consider is descri...

The Street Beat is one of my all-time favorites. I love the ergos of it, and as you've mentioned, the handle scales are beautiful: a micarta-lover's dream. (I wish the Street Bowie had followed suit, actually.) I've tried out the Enuff, and it was fine but seemed a little small: my first impression ...

This is a beautiful photograph, and unlike any I've ever seen. If not for all the discontinued models, it would make an excellent calendar cover.

Thank you for taking the time to comment, Mr. Schempp. I hope it's clear from all the posts that you have a considerable fan base in the Spyderco world.

Best,
Mark

I didn't mean to imply that Mr. Schempp designed any of the others that have been mentioned. (As an aside, the Shabaria and Chokwe are two of my favorites!)

Anyway, for future Ethnic Series models, I'd give my eye teeth for a Japanese higonokami, but with a locking system of some sort.

Sequels can certainly be done well: the second Godfather comes immediately to mind. In general though, the major studios just take the elements that they think made the originals popular and amplify them, usually with disastrous results (see—or better yet, don't—both Matrix sequels). I can't disagre...

Not all spydie-lovers are American, and the bowie is to us what the Navaja is to Spain. Both are ethnic as ****. But the bowie is southern by the grace of God :D It's a fair enough point. And if we go by Oxford's definition of "ethnic," you may be right: "Of or relating to a populati...

Hang on, feeling them now. I would say that, yes the polished or buffed G-10 & micarta feel very similar but the micarta is a little sort of dryer, grippier. Then the main grip is the hand hugging shape of the big Persian C83 & not so much the scale material. O. Heh, thanks. Never miss out ...

Ha, interesting question. I'm not quite sure how people have come to the conclusion that a knife wouldn't be useful in space, though. Back in the 60s, Randall and astronaut Gordon Cooper designed the Number 17 Astro for the Mercury Seven crew. Members of the Gemini and Apollo missions carried the ma...

The rods and stones do not release fresh abrasive as do waterstones (in general) and thus while they don't wear out, they will wear very smooth and lose aggression over extended use and become much finer than they were initially. However they do not need to be discarded all that has to be done is g...

Maybe this is stating the obvious, but even though the ceramic rods don't wear out, they do fill up with steel particles, which reduces their effectiveness. In my experience, it eventually gets to the point where scrubbing them is of limited use (and kind of a pain). Other than getting a Japanese wa...

This knife has been on my wish list for a long time, and I had no idea that this was the case. Guess I always just assumed it was the same as the C83 and C105. Do any other Spyderco models use buffed G-10? Does it have a similar feel to Micarta?

There's a great passage in Susan Orlean's book The Orchid Thief that sums things up for me: "I was starting to believe that the reason it matters to care passionately about something is that it whittles the world down to a more manageable size. It makes the world seem not huge and empty but ful...

Sorry to be dense here (and if this has been covered elsewhere), but I'm curious about how other members interpret this bullet point from the guidelines: • Do not transmit via Spyderco Forum any information, data, text, files, links, software, chat, communication or other materials. This may be of limited use, but here's a link to a description of the designations that Cold Steel uses for its factory seconds. Obviously, Spyderco may go by a different system, but it at least gives you a ballpark idea of the kind of issues that could be involved. (Also note: "If a knife does...

Just FYI, The sword video has more to do with the fact that stainless steel is too brittle to make swords from. Utilitarian swords ALMOST always have to be made with carbon steel to be able to handle impact. There are plenty of Spanish and American-made "swords" that would suffer the same...

It can be maddening, to be sure. I have a similar reaction when people buy cheap knives simply because they bear the names of gun manufacturers. But I also I think we need to be careful of putting ourselves on a pedestal here. We are, after all, speaking from the position of knife users and collecto...
