engraved serial numbers (vs. printed)

My endura has a serial # printed on the blade. I have seen some spydercos with collector numbers actually engraved on the blades and handles. When did they start printing the #'s on the blade rather than engraving them?

My EDC is currently an SS 50/50 Endura. I figure I use it about 4-5 times a day on average.

What's the rationale for the civilian blade?

I don't understand the purpose of the civilian blade. What does it offer than a regular police blade doesn't? The tip looks like it would be very easy to break.

There seems to be a buttload of Spyderco "Native" models for sale on ebay with "1st Generation BRK" printed on the blade.



Does anyone know the history of this model? There must gave been a gazillion of them made.
