Why did you join?

Hi All, I guess I've been doing the forum thing for a couple of decades now. While I've seen many come and go as the hobby / intgerest is not for everyone, I have seen a number of folks hang in for years as we discussed things not often discussed in forums about designs, steel, performance, etc. I f...

Re: SE K390 model list?

Hi David, Actually it's a work in progress and we're adding models regularly. Whaddayouwant? Getting the steel is a challenge as they've never made so much of it before. Truth be known, we worked on this for years. First we had to get the steel, then test the steel, then we made a Mule Team to see y...

Re: Helping Hand

Hi Josh, When Gail and I began Spyderco in January of 1976, We were homeless and living in a 1955 International Step Van that converted into a mini-motor-home. We began the company as partners with our 2 year old daughter. We didn't have much money. Our first "project" was to see if we could; invent...

Re: Current Byrd Back Lock Quality?

Hi Brian,

I don't know. I know there are some, and they've been taken over by their children, but we no longer work with with them so I've not kept track.

Re: Sharpmaker and sharpening SERRATED K390 - expectations?

As suggested, light pressure. let the CBN/Diamond do the cutting. Or if in doubt, just use the corner of the brown stone at 30 degrees until you are happy. I recommend a loupe so you can see what you are doing as you are doing it. Then maybe a 40 degree micro bevel for 2 or 3 strokes. Your too kind ...

Re: Current Byrd Back Lock Quality?

Hi Ugaarguy,

We've had to work hard with these makers to get where we needed to be. It's been 20 years with the same makers so we're making progress. I must admit that we've gone through a few that didn't work out. We had the same issue in Seki and ended up with 3 after 40 years.

There is confirmation that we will see a SE Police4 but I am unsure if it will be K390 or VG10?
Hi Darby,

the plan is for both.

Re: Rex 121

The word is "Obstinate". Taking a piece of steel and turning it into a knife blade is challenging enough, but the more obstinate a steel is,the better edge holding generally. Because the steel does not want to give up molecules on forming, abrading, polishing, sharpening, etc.

Re: Rex 121

I didn't say it was bad. Just a different flavor. Sometimes the hardest horse to train ends up the best? We do this to learn about the "spirit" of the steel. "All Good, just different".

Re: Help with an Old Endura.......

Hi Poolhustler, Nice old pieces, and in good condition for a 30 year old knife. How many of us can say the same? ;) We made 4 variations of that Endura 1. (The 2 was stainless scales) The one on the bottom is either a 1 or a 2, I would have to see the underside of the clip. The two at the top are ei...

Re: Sage 5 Lightweight Frenzy

Hi Brian, I worked with Leon and we filed the patent for him. Lotsa interesting stories about this lock. We could never get a maker to make it in production. One was working on it, but then the family had an abundance of health problems and the remaining crew couldn't do it. The second maker that wa...

Re: Rex 121

The steel is a REAL PITA to work with. Our Taichung maker is particularly good.

I've been using the test sample and resharpening it. I've been using CBN. It is very resistant.
