Re: What to use to protect tool steel blades

The other half of the folks get a case of the wobblies if they need to cut up their Happy Meal and their knife pivot is lubricated with anything other than non-GMO, free-trade, food-safe, petroleum-based mineral oil. Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle. I use Ballistol. It's only a little ...

Re: School me about stress risers

I don't know where the term stress risers came from, stress concentration is probably a more correct term. To school someone about stress concentrations could get into a whole college degree in fracture mechanics. I took a single course in fracture mechanics in engineering school and I worked in the ...

Re: The Pain of Parting with Knives

There are several aspects to this. I have had some knives that I sold and replaced with newer models, I don't worry so much about the ones that are gone. Spyderco continues to bring out variations in new steels so I don't mind selling the older steel in order to try the newer steel.
I have also sold ...

I have a Gayle Bradley in my rolling toolbox, plus an old Manix 2 154CM and a 4V Mule with my own micarta scales.

My first was the original micarta Wayne Goddard. My favorite today is the Manix 2 LW with PM2 almost equal to it.

Re: Which Spyderco for a Reliable and Versatile EDC?

Manix 2 and PM2 are some of the most popular Spyderco models and some of the most widely carried. Both of them are my favorites and I own and carry versions of each. However there are so many Spyderco models that are good for EDC so it's hard to go wrong no matter which one you pick.

Re: EDC rotation and edge retention

I rotate approximately weekly, impossible for me to know the cutting history of any knife. When I notice a knife getting dull I sharpen it. Or I make a mental note to sharpen it and when I get several I'll stop and sharpen them.

Re: What the burr?

I asked myself the same question long ago- why not alternate one side to the other until you hit maximum sharpness and stop then. I wasn't sure if this was even possible, you would have to be really good to know you have reached maximum sharpness, go beyond that a few strokes and now you've got a ...

Re: Let's revisit the Tatanka

I like the design. I would like to feel one in person to see how if felt and how it handled. It is larger than what I would normally carry and use, the Military is my normal limit but I usually carry a PM2 or Manix 2. 10 years ago the law in my state had a 5.5" limit so I thought I would buy a ...

I'm sure the great majority of people here have numerous knives they carry so they don't carry any one for very long.

Re: Office Workers: What do you EDC?

I've worked from home the past few years, when I was regularly going to my office I most often carried a PM2 or Manix 2. Most people around here aren't that sensitive to knives. If my knife was seen in the office it was in the process of opening a box or slicing an apple so it wasn't really out of ...

Re: Let's talk about edge stability

I'm a structural engineer so I look at steel a little bit differently. It makes sense to me that edge stability is mostly a function of hardness (yield strength). I had never thought about what happens at the macroscopic level when carbide size became significant. That makes sense too, it seems to ...

If you need to separate something. The knife is in the other room. The scissors are right there in front of you. If you'd rather walk over to the other room to retrieve your knife... you might be a Knife Enthusiast.

If you get mad at yourself when you find that you need to separate something and ...

Re: Thoughts to share on a foundry

I wonder if that MIM process Magpul is using reduces the problem of producing small volume cutlery steel from “foundry” to “a small shop that grinds up elements and mixes the powders together”. If you don’t need to melt steel and process everything into bar stock, it’s got to reduce the amount of ...

Re: Sprint Run Availability

Some combinations will always have more demand than others, such as the PM2 that was already mentioned. Also sprints get released over a period of time to different retailers so the scammers can't just grab all of them up as soon as orders open, they have to hunt for them just like we do.

Re: Ideal GB2

I like the GB1, I haven't tried the GB2. I think the GB1 is great as it is size wise but I understand there are locations with 3" blade length limits so a smaller knife would help those, and some people are in surroundings where people judge them if they pull out a big knife.

If I designed one it would be a lot like a Starmate blade in a PM2 handle. A Gayle Bradley 2 is pretty close.

I didn't see this brought up yet but S110V is significantly harder to sharpen. It is a good choice IF you have proper sharpening equipment.

Apparently they claim that they used S35VN steel and their test results from CATRA indicated that the blades performed as well and somewhat better than cold rolled or CPM steel.
CATRA is one thing, what about toughness?

Re: Sal, once again, you had a brilliant ideea

I would expect a convex edge to actually reduce strength and increase "sliceyness" given the same edge angle (which is the only way to compare apples to apples).

I agree and I understand your drawing perfectly but I'll warn you that we had massive arguments about this on the other forum, most ...
