Re: Just bought a KME sharpener and I have questions...

That appearance is normal with a precise micro bevel. You can do what is called "back sharpening." This means that you go back to sharpening at 17 degrees per side after putting on the 20 dps micro bevel. This will improve your sharpness (if you close in on eliminating the micro bevel slow...

To me it looks like the lines were done with a sandblaster.

Re: Sal, any chance for new CBN/Diamond rods?

I have thought about this for a while. I am in favor!

I recently switched to the white rods because the brown rods don't offer an aggressive edge anyway.

Re: Wicked Edge or EdgePro??

I have the WE Pro Pack 2 but I use the Edge Pro 100x more often. The set up takes too long with the WE and it wont let me set a 10 DPS edge. Full flat ground knives sit on the edge pro better than they clamp into the WE.

Re: Oiling your knives questions.

Mineral oil will work to protect your knives but eezox, clp, weapons shield, tuf cloth, and pretty much anything else will work better and longer. Mineral oil is just okay for most pivots but not good for bearing pivot knives. Bearing pivots shouldn't be wet IMO. Just wipe the pivot area of the blad...

Re: More about the Spyderco UF stone. Good stuff.

The UF stones / rods are some the most used in my substantial assortment of abrasives. Touching up a ~zero ground delica on the UF at 10 dps makes it breathtakingly sharp - no way I would touch it with a strop. I have the Shapton GS 16K and there are times when I like it but most of the time I like ...

Aesthetically the pivot pins are identical when the knife is assembled. Both pins are domed.

Were there any sprints produced after September?
These pins are from regular production mils. I believe the last sprint was late 2013.

Re: December Spyderco Byte . . New Steels on the horizon!

I was looking at incorrect composition numbers earlier on the CTS B70. Carpenter says: Carpenter® CTS® B70P Alloy Nominal Analysis 1.10 C, 0.40 Mn, 0.025 Max. Ph, 0.01 Max. S, 0.30 Si, 14.00 Cr, 2.00 Mo, 0.25 Nb, 1.00 V, Bal. Fe ® A powder metallurgy derivative of Carpenter’s CRB-7 alloy offering e...

Re: Edge retention as influenced by apex finishing grit

Yea, push cutting manilla rope with 3cr13 should be a brief test. I would have a good laugh if I saw someone push cutting manilla rope while not doing a specific push cut test. Maybe I would ask them why they were trying to mash their edge with rope instead of with a rock.

Re: Edge retention as influenced by apex finishing grit

I think that is an excellent point because it isn't obvious that these same stones would produce the same results on very different steels. So true. 3Cr13 seems to require such a coarse edge to have decent edge retention on manilla rope. I don't think aebl at 60rc would be so fickle. Its interestin...

Re: Spyderco tolerances

It's a pocket knife. From a purely practical standpoint, how tight do tolerances have to be? I'm not using it to plot a course from "point A" to some tiny island 5000 miles away. I'm not trying to hit a dime size target at 100 yards or score 300 on the National Match Course with it. I'm n...

Re: Spyderco tolerances

Im here to agree with you. I would love to see a tighter tolerance Spyderco. I rarely carry anything other than a reground Spyderco but I do own a Sebenza 21 and 25 just because I appreciate how the tolerances compliment the overall design. Usually on my Spyderco knives I can lube and adjust the piv...
