Re: Mystery Knife Center exclusive coming 6/23 (S90V/burlap micarta Shaman)

For those who think these should be in a tougher steel because of the blade thickness, I applaud your finances. $238 would be an expensive hard use folder for some. I will continue to choose something in a nice 14C28N, 9CR18MOV, or D2 for 'hard use'. Something in the $50-$75 range. There are several...

Re: Maxamet edge retention

Just a few words of encouragement. I have a Maxamet mule, Para3, and Native 5. They all behave as you would expect from the various online tests and that was before I upgraded my sharpening set up. I once went through a mountain of cardboard from a move with the mule and it was the most impressive p...

Re: DLT CruWear Purple G10 PM2

Would consider if the scales weren't grape. As it is include another $50 - $150 for new scales. If you're happy with brown micarta, it's available now, and it's only $30 more than the purple G10. Quite a good suggestion and as these have been in and out of stock I've gone back and forth. Maybe if I...

Re: Ultem Handle Material

This material has been used for decades to make guitar picks and is one of the most popular materials for that purpose. So there is a ton of information online about it. Gotta say I've never seen a single complaint about the beeswax amber color or translucence in guitar forums. So if you've never ac...

Re: Best Spyderco as Back-up to CCW

First of all, if you can carry a CCW, by all means, do so. There are so many good choices in belts, holsters, and pistols you can carry comfortably all day. And practicing, while ammo has gotten expensive, is fun as are classes that train you both how to handle your firearm better and how to show th...

Re: Best Spyderco as Back-up to CCW

In what scenario would you deploy a knife as a backup to a firearm? If you feel your CCW requires a backup, carry a second firearm. Failing that, chemical spray so you can get away. Of course, if you're actually curious which Spyderco would make the best 19th century weapon, then I would recommend t...

Re: Pricing

We vote with our currency. There is such a thing as brand loyalty and Spyderco certainly has earned their share of this and I'm sure they will sell a bunch of knives this year. Watu, Spyopera, and the classic green CTS-204P PM2 are in my pocket on a regular basis. As for price points, in our one sid...

Re: Who has a Spyopera?

I've had mine for several months now. A few observations in no particular priority.. - The rounded edges on the liners and spine are nicer in your hand than you would think. It's a premium touch. - It has a skeletonized titanium frame which makes it both light and solid. It's something you notice wh...

Re: Anyone else concerned?

And yet the knife in my pocket as I type this is a Spyderco Watu. Not because it's an expression of nationalism (I'm in the US) or because it's the best value. I carry it because the ergonomics, material choices, and blade design make it the best EDC among the many knives I own.

Re: Anyone else concerned?

There are plenty of examples (e.g. Case, Buck, et al) that are still in business without apparent innovation. In many cases the lack of innovation seems to be a primary part of their marketing strategy. On the other hand, higher end Chinese makers seem to be gaining a considerable foothold in the US...

Re: Steels you won't buy...and why

There was a time when I had to have M390, S110V, and Maxamet. Now I find that S30V is fine. All the while using VG10 daily in the kitchen. I would say I would avoid older stuff. AUS-8, 420H, even 14c28n. Don't care if the steel is tough if the edge holding sucks. The more experience I have, the more...

Re: Tougher steel Spyderco knives?

Hard use work: Utility knife. Wear out a blade. Replace. Repeat. That's what they're for. Cheap and effective. Hard use recreation: Fixed blade in 3V or 4V is nice. A2 is OK though. Hard use home maintenance: Folder with a good but inexpensive steel like 9cr18mov. If I abuse it a bit, that's OK. It'...

Re: Prices going up: US G10 Spydies increasing more than other families

I do think people forget sometimes that many businesses really don't like to raise prices. Not because controlling prices is some sort of gift to their customers, something I think is a bad idea because it keeps capitalism from working properly, but because they don't want to lose market share.

Re: Prices going up: US G10 Spydies increasing more than other families

Interesting. I would have thought the impact on Spyderco from We/Civivi, Artisan Cutlery, and others in the Ti flipper wave would have forced Spyderco to hold the line on cost this year. Of course, I don't know what we'll see in the way of price changes on other brands.

Re: Para 3 CPM-S45VN Question

I saw the older Larrin discussion on S45VN but in his updated charts the steel's position is somewhat changed compared to where it was a few years ago. I'm sure it will be fine. Not like people in the knife community are broadly complaining about the steel. As for making me feel better, thanks. Wasn...

Re: Para 3 CPM-S45VN Question

Buying a new knife is when we get to over-analyze, nitpick, rationalize, and scrutinize. But if there is a good enough discount off regular price, that all goes out the window. For $105 (reference 'crazy good deals' thread) I couldn't resist a S45V PM3. I am quite certain that the steel, while not m...

Re: Para 3 CPM-S45VN Question

Based on current charts, S30V should hold an edge better. S45V should be more stain resistant. I have the latter on order because a good price came up but would actually have preferred the former. .. By way of example, you can sharpen your S45VN Para 3 to, say, 15° per side, which will probably hol...

Re: Para 3 CPM-S45VN Question

There are limits to the idea that a more ductile steel will hold a lower edge angle better over time than a steel with superior edge holding characteristics. Probably why I like S110V and Maxamet so much. Of course, I'm sure it becomes shades of gray in steels that are close in performance like S30V...
