Re: Show your Mule

This is another Mule I finished on 22 August 2020 (an otherwise awful day, that's why I remember the date). This is PD1 with kirinite scales; red, white, and blue G-10 liners and pins. Went with the patriotic theme.

Re: Show your Mule

I've been away from this forum and others for far too long. Moved, 2020 happened, garage not set up to work on knives or anything else. I finished this one in RWL34 with urban camo KVH series Tac-Cam scales, probably three years ago.

Re: Re: Name a Spyderco knife you thought you would like but didn't once you owned it.

Not sure of the model number, but it was the Wayne Goddard folder with brown micarta scales. I liked almost everything about it except that it was an absolute pain to open. Lubed it, opened and closed it over and over again and it never got easier so I sold it.

Re: Show your Mule

First Mule I've done in a few years. We moved and it took way too long to get the garage set up so I could work. The Mule is M390, and this is the third try with this one. These scales are G11 Garolite and olive drab G10. The pins are white G10. I think the halos around the pins were the result of d...

^^ I like the idea of micarta pins. This is the third time I've used micarta pins or tube. The large holes are roughly 3/8", they seem to vary in size depending on the Mule. Micarta pins are easier to work than the stainless corby bolts I like to use and they bring a different look. I think I ...

Here's my Mule in CTS B75P. The scales are butterscotch paper micarta, yellow fiber liners, and micarta pins, held together with two-ton epoxy. http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss147/spook89_89/MovingDay052.jpg The micarta was a totally different color on the outside than on the inside once ground...

I like FRN as well, but handle material isn't my first concern when buying a knife. All my Spydercos have FRN except for my C10G Endura with foliage green G-10 scales and VG-10 blade. For handles, I'm a micarta fan when I have a choice and it's on a blade I like. I have two ZDP Enduras and I like th...

Hey, the activity on this thread has slowed down a bit lately. What's everyone working on? http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss147/spook89_89/M390Muleresize-1.jpg I took the black and gray G-10 scales off since the left and right sides didn't line up (the black and red sections were off). I used b...

Doug - that is some nice work! I really like the micarta caps over the pins. It gives the knife a whole new look. Ted, Thanks for the good words! Actually, the brown micarta isn't caps, they're pins that run all the way through. The large holes in the Mule are big enough 3/8" rods. I might do ...

Here's my new Elmax Mule. The scales are green micarta, with some gray layers I've never noticed in green micarta before. The pins are 3/8" micarta. I started with 100 grit paper and went to 2000, then buffed with black, brown, red, and white compounds, using a Dremel tool. http://i570.photobuc...

Trying again... Here's my Cruwear Mule, wearing scales of barbwire micarta and micarta tubes. I started the shaping with 60 grit sanding drums and sandpaper and progressed to 2000 grit, them buffing wheels going from black, brown, red, and white compounds. This barbwire micarta is great stuff. I lik...

TedP, Very nice! I wanted to use brown micarta for my Cruwear Mule but the shape of the handle wouldn't allow me to use the piece that I have. Instead, I'm using barbwire micarta from Texas Knifemakers Supply. The fabric base is burlap and makes some nice patterns. It shines up nicely, too. It's 1/2...

I buy Mules or any other blade to make my own handles. Mostly micarta but some G-10. For something like Mules, I can't see just cord-wrapping it, partly because I'm not particularly creative at it.

Hey Nozh, welcome to the West. Did Soviet producers ever make faulty products? (I know the answer; I've seen MiGs up close.) Were Soviet company presidents ever held accountable for the crap they made? As another member said, the founder of the company owned up and apologized. Either grow up and acc...

The first Spyderco I got was a fully serrated Endura I bought at the Griffiss AFB BX in '92 or '93. As I was removing it from the package, the plastic clip broke off. So, it was compromised before it got out of the wrapping! I ground the remains of the clip off but I was never a fan of fully serrate...

Dirty = used, that's what a knife is for unless it's a collector's piece. I used to get antsy about scratching or denting knives, but the scratched ones are the ones I use most. No scratches = too pretty to use.

Where'd you get the red micarta? I've been looking for a fairly bright red and have only come across darker -almost maroon- reds. I got it from Texas Knifemakers. They also sell tex-tuff. I used 1/8". I was in Houston last month and stopped by their store. Good shop, nice folks working there, ...
