Re: Taking apart knives

I agree regardless of the supposed reasons not to, a selection of screws, screw posts, pivots, pivot washers should, and could be made available at a low cost, resulting in greater customer satisfaction for those of us that feel confident to do so.

Re: Taking apart knives - part 2

Just as I have done with any 1911, these excellent knives are disassembled and dialed in before ever carrying a new Spyderco knife. First the spine edge which often has a course grind finish, so it gets smoothed and comfortable, as does the handle edges 360º, normally on a 3M EXL wheel. The clip is ...

The ball bearing doesn't spin, but is hard and slides smoothly on the hard blade surface. I have found some liner locks to be too hard to open for my preference, and some have a hard spot right after you release the blade to close as the ball climbs the corner. I modify both areas of the blade to fa...

Pretty human to like, or prefer what ever was chosen as long as it holds up and does the job. It's all good, but different. I chose the Wicked Edge system. Once past the learning curve, which all will have I am very happy with the results. I like being able to do both sides and believe it is easier ...

My tenacious has really bad blade centering, its way to one side. However, it does not effect its functionality, and it still locks up tight with a very thick liner lock. I find that the screws can be loosened just a bit and the handle warped to center and re-tighten. Stays centered. There is just ...

Superior results requires superior technique, and just plain hard work. Simply buying quality equipment is not enough. There is a real learning curve to having superior results with any equipment, despite our thoughts of bought success.

I'm of the belief that if it doesn't rub, its okay for me. Perfect centering is a neurosis perpetuated by many a you tube reviewer and plenty of OCD knife nuts. It has no real effect on the knife during use. No, but the point is you can easily correct the centering of the blade with in reason. Why ...

Blade Centering

A few have mentioned with disdain that after re-assembly their blade wasn't centered. Even on a YouTube a complaint that the knife wasn't precision enough, because it didn't re-center after re-assembly. The blade tip being centered as many know is simply an assembly procedure of getting it centered....

The pitted ball is unfortunate, however the ball rides on it's high surface not the up and down of the pits in the ball. The rough feeling when closing, or opening slowly are generated by the ball riding up and down on the blade tang surface. This will smooth out, I have found. I do like to ramp the...

One thing that can help is to felt tip pen the bevels. Then stroke the stone and see where the angle you are holding is actually cutting. I like a very sharp symmetrical edge and have been using a Wicked Edge sharpener with amazing results. I always start out with the bevels inked to make sure of my...

Coming from the hand gun 1911 world and doing my own hot tank bluing, (black oxide) I can say it is the same as the steel itself, as that process is a conversion of the surface steel and not a coating. However cold bluing is a precipitate film and would be much more questionable.
