As far as VG-10, I love it, still and always. It is plenty hard, stainless, and does everything well, even better in SE.

Though I haven't actually done it, I have read enough to know the time and cash are very minimal.

I'd send it in, as Mike suggested. You could always mod it after the fact, if the warranty doesn't apply. I'd be surprised if it doesn't though.
