Just another Spyderholic who can say, without a doubt, you're missing out if you eliminate the Taiwan Spydies. They are simply awesome. Smooth. Rock-solid. My most recent acquisition is the Taiwan-made Domino. It might just be the "perfect Spyderco."

Congrats. I've got the digicam / DLC (black blade) PM2, and it's one of my favorites.

I'll 'fess up and admit publicly that I like the Spyderco Damascus blades. :) I have a Damascus mule. I've also got TWO of the Caly 3's in Damascus. Liked it so much, I got one to carry and one as a safe queen and future gift to my son.

I've said that if a person could only have ONE Spyderco, the Sage 1 would be a worthy candidate.

I have all the Sage models. The Sage 3 is my least favorite. I think the 1 is my favorite with the 2 as a close second. The 4 is simply very pretty.

The first thing that came to mind for me was the Manix 2. Fits the criteria except it may be more like $80 - and well worth it.

Also, in the same price range, but a smaller / lighter model: Native.

Excellent choice for your first one. If a person could only have one Spydie, I'd nominate the Sage 1.

I see you're also into the macro photography thing. I've posted a bunch of macro shots of Spydies over the past few years here on the forum. Fun stuff!

I have all the Sage knives. The Sage 3 is my least favorite of the series, but at $75, I agree... a good buy!

I hope I don't jinx myself. But, I've not had any issues with my Spydies coming out of my pocket when clipped.

I agree the Sage 1 is a fantastic knife. It was one of my first. I actually like the wire clips better, as they carry deeper / lower.

The Caly 3 CF / ZDP was my first Spydie that sent me down the path of addiction. No issues. It was perfection, and now I've got about 50 Spydies.

I've got three of the Spyderco autos. Why? Just because. They're "taboo." They're "cool." I've never carried any of them. (Embassy, Citadel, and Bifold)

I'd like to get a Microtech OTF some day... when I can justify the $400 worth of "cool."

But, if speed of deployment is the "issue," I dare say ...

About three years ago, I bought my first Spydie (A Caly 3 in Carbon Fiber). I had NO intention of being a "collector." Now I've got somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 Spydies. Addictive?? Naaaaaaaa!

Looks a bit like the Vallotton to me... but, not nearly as nice / elegant.

It's a gorgeous knife and the finest of the Sage series, in my opinion.
