Re: 1st Impressions Of The New SpyOpera

In case anyone was wondering (though, I don't think anyone is), the pivot uses steel ball bearings and the liners have steel washers imbedded.

Re: 1st Impressions Of The New SpyOpera

I just got mine today. I've been wanting a knife in micarta for a long time, but never found one that really spoke to me before. Obviously, I really like the micarta on it. Like everyone else has stated, it's great. Action is super smooth and lighter than you would expect. I think this is due, in pa...

Re: Spyderco 2018 Production Sample - Mantra 3

Thanks for all the pictures and information, Mr Blonde! This is always my favorite thread of the year. Just have a quick question, this is what's listed for the Mantra 3. I'm assuming it's not supposed to be exactly the same as the Smock. Blade length should be around 3.16", right? Specificatio...

Re: Chaparral carbon handles vs. Manix2 carbon handles

The Taichung factory has access to some laminated materials you don't see from other factories. The basket-weave CF is just a single layer on top of G10 (like it is on the GB 1/2/air and the sages and some others, as mentioned). This bothers some people, but not me. I hate peel-ply, so if I get a kn...

Re: Definite purchases out of the new releases?

Only must-buy for me is the rhino. Was going to get the knife formerly known as sliver, until I saw the blade length and thickness.

Re: What do you think is Spyderco's FLAGSHIP model?

It depends on how you define "flagship". Most expensive? Most popular? One you happen to like the best? I think it should be the knife that best represents the company, and for me, the Native series is the obvious choice (in-house design, CQI, backlock, low- and high-end variants, etc). Th...

I could be wrong, but I thought Moki made them. Didn't they also make the C27?

Re: Your favorite spyderco that you believe is perfect

The closest to perfect for me is the chaparral 1. Carries well, thin blade stock, I like the scales, ergos are perfect for me, doesn't scare people. About the last point, this and a dragonfly have gotten compliments at a hospital I volunteer at, but for some reason the bradley air freaked people out...

Linerless FRN don't have washers (salt, native, dragonfly, etc). Lined FRN like the delica and endura still have washers.

Re: Massdrop appears to be conforming to MAP

I kind of understand where the justification for MAP is coming from, and I don't have a problem with it. However, I just want to point out how it plays out for me (I realize I am not a representative sample). Now, I only have something like 20 spydies, which I understand is not very many as far as f...

Re: Liner and frame lock longevity

I think it's against forum rules to mention the maker, whether it's a fluke or not. As for your questions, I don't think this is a common problem. At least, I've never heard anyone mention that particular failure mode before and I've never experienced it myself. I know that sometimes makers will fla...

We spoke with the TSA regarding getting approval for a design before the expense of tooling up. They said they wouldn't do that. That it will be dependnt on the discretion of the TSA officer checking. They also said that if the character was suspicious looking, then they could confiscate even a &qu...

To me, flagship means the best, most-expensive model. Eg, gold-ring lenses for Nikon (red-ring for Canon) would be their flagship lenses. I'm not sure how that translates to Spyderco's knife models. On the other hand, iconic, to me, suggests the models that are most closely associated with the brand...

Comparing two factory knives from the same maker one is hollow-ground and 2mm, the other is full-flat ground and 3.5mm. Perhaps my logic is flawed but that seems pretty obvious in favor of the Cento. From the same maker? One is made in Seki, the other is made in Golden. I already gave an example of...
