Re: Steel for Fish

S35V and XHP hold an edge very well on fishing knives. VG10 will need to be resharpened more often, but is worth a look. I like S35V for edge holding and resistance to corrosion. These are commends about steel, but a rubber grip on a handle is helpful when dealing with a slippery blood-coated fish.

Re: Linerless Chaparral LW and More Colors

I know it is apples and oranges, but I would like to see another run of the sprint Michael Walker liner lock. The blade has about the same cutting edge length as the Chaparral and mine weighs only 51 grams (without clip). It has a liner on one side, but the CF makes for a rigid handle. When the Chap...

Re: Linerless Chaparral LW and More Colors

I have the original Chaparral (with S30V) and it sits in my pocket right now - without the clip. It weighs only 67 grams. Personally, I don’t see a great need for a lighter Chaparral, let alone one without liners. I prefer liners in my pocket knives.

Re: Ideal Blade Steels For Whittling?

Yes, the nick was caused by the blade hitting the spring. I reprofiled the blade using a 1X30” belt sander, and it was a bear to do this. The Queen D2 steel is very wear resistant. I didn’t expect so much difficulty, since the blade is pretty thin.

Re: Ideal Blade Steels For Whittling?

Queen made a carver in D2 and it still may be available on special order, I don’t know. THey called it an “oar carver.” I have carving knives in Scandinavian carbon steel, but you should be fine with something like D2, XHP, or S35V. If you are carving dense hard woods, a blade with good edge retent...

Re: What grit finish for a hunting/fishing knife?

“Grit value” has a different meaning depending on the type of stone. For diamond stones, a 600 grit stone is described as fine, but produces a much coarser edge then a fine India, which is perhaps 320 grit. A 1200 grit diamond stone is not as fine as a fine Spyderco Ceramic. I won’t touch my woodwor...

Re: EDC steel advice

I would recommend the less expensive model in S30V. It holds an edge well and I like it a lot. The VG10 model is likely to be easier to sharpen and VG10 has excellent rust resistance. I use a Spyderco Stretch in VG10 for surf fishing and it rides in a bathing suit pocket while I get drenched. It has...

Re: Dedicated box cutter knife?

I generally use the Milwaukee folding utility knife for cutting up boxes, but I have a Stanley folding utility knife that has a replaceable thin blade that is 2 1/2 X 1/2”. Only about 2” extends out from the 4.25” handle, but it is a great knife for cutting mat board, cardboard, and similar stuff. M...

Re: UF OR TRANSLUCENT STONE?

I have an old black Arkansas stone that I was given more than 60 years ago, more current translucent and black stones, a Norton Lily White Arkansas stone, Norton Soft Arkansas stones, and a variety of Spyderco ceramic stones and DMT diamond stones. I also have too many water stones. I restrict use o...

It is one of my favorites. I would like to see one with CF laminate, and a steel like S35V or XHP. The CF one often rides in my pocket, but the CF is on the slick side.

I have some steak knives and a bread knife with pakkawood handles that have been in use for more than 50 years. The surface finish is no longer glossy, but they are in good shape.

Re: Ideal Blade Steels For Whittling?

Frost/Mora makes some inexpensive fixed blade carving knives in a laminated carbon steel. The inner core is RC62 I believe. The smaller one, with a 2” blade, holds an edge really well and is easy to keep sharp with a strop loaded with abrasives. The one that I have has a wharncliff configuration, bu...

Re: I've got a friend flying to Belgium and UK... Carry options?

I never carry in Europe. The only time I don’t have a knife in my pocket is when I am in the shower or pajamas.
Size varies, but I would avoid carry in the UK and many other European places. This is just me.

Re: Fillet Knife? Steel Types?

I just got back from a trip to the beach and I did some fishing off the surf. The fish are small, but tasty. I was not happy with a Buck open season 6 1/2” fillet knife. The S35V steel was fine, but it had more curve to the blade than I like and the handle was way too small and very slick when wet. ...

Re: FRN vs G10 vs Wood: Strengths and Weaknesses in each for Spyderco Knife Handles?

arty, I would like some compound that is rubber based but looks like wood. Checkered rubber with a wood finish. Would you like that on a Spyderco knife if it was durable? I have a couple of fishing knives with VG10 blades and Thermorun handles. The handles are durable enough in the kitchen, but I a...

Re: FRN vs G10 vs Wood: Strengths and Weaknesses in each for Spyderco Knife Handles?

Lots of Asian exotic woods take a long time to dry properly. If they are not kiln dried and green, it could take upwards of a year for the wood to dry. If shipped to a dry climate, cracking and shrinkage are assured. If the wood is stabilized, as in impregnated with polymers under pressure, it won’t...

Re: Knife rules for N. Carolina?

Knife limits vary with the location. Some cities have 3” limits, and some have none. Open carry is not OK in some places, where it can be prosecuted as “going armed to the terror of the public.” In some cities or counties, it is not illegal. Anyone can carry a gun in a car as long as it is not conce...
