If I get what you're saying, you want to change the angle from 15 to 12 degrees per side using the inclusive 30 degree back bevel guides on the Sharpmaker. I've heard of people putting a book or some object underneath one of the sides of the unit while keeping the knife blade vertical to achieve a ...

Oooohhh I just had another idea.
I'm still visualizing a length of music wire that sticks up from the handle. Then at the top of the music wire is a loop with a string tied to it. Hanging from the end of the string is a small/simple weight, that hangs just above the level of the knife. Then I can ...

sharpmaker - visual aid for maintaining vertical?

I've been contemplating how I can make it easier for me to get very accurate angles when sharpening. First I wanted to see how much the knife has to move before I have gotten "somewhat inaccurate".

My target angle recently was 12* per side. If I estimate that the height of the knife blade is 1 ...

Congrats on your score! I sharpen professionally, and I have a 1x42 Kalamazoo belt grinder that I love. I'm not familiar with the grinder you describe. Do you know how long the belt is? I am going to have to assume it is a detail sander, so the belt you have might be pretty light and flexible.
I ...

I'm in love with a belt sander

I picked up a sharpmaker last month, quickly followed by a diamond honing stone frm harbor freight. I've been practicing on kitchen knives and gotten some pretty decent edges, but I'm hoping to do better. I know I can improve in getting the microbevel, but the main area I have struggled with is just ...

I don't have personal experience, but this thread http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25464 mentions vg10 can handle as far as 20-25*.

I did more searching and found a thread on this very question - http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25464

The general consensus there is that 30* for the microbevel is not a problem, and even as low as 20-25 may work well. I'm sure the specifics depend on the usage the blade sees.

Any trick to getting a thread approved by moderator?

I posted a questioning on sharpening in the General Discussion area, and saw a message that it would need to be approved by a moderator before it would show up. That was on Friday, and it has not appeared yet. Is there anyone I need to ping to request approval?
thanks!

Newbie: Primary bevel for VG-10 (Delica 4)?

I just purchased my first :spyder: this week, as well as a sharpmaker, and have been thoroughly enjoying them.
Also this week I got a little compulsive in reading about sharpening.. spent some time reading over posts by Cliff Stamp, gunmike1, and a fair number of others.
I've come to hold the ...
