Re: Review: Murray Carter Minarai Petty
I’m certainly not a chef or expert on kitchen knives, but aren’t most kitchen knives ffg? I’m not an expert but I’ve made a bunch of Japanese style kitchen knives. I’ve never heard of convex grinds on them. There is a concept of a concave grind on the food side of the blade to reduce friction in ce...

Re: Sharpening a double edged blade point
I would not repair the tip with sharpmaker stones, I would get a regular coarse bench stone and grind the outer (convex) edge back until the chip is gone and the inner (concave) edge meets it at a new tip. Then sharpen as usual. The sharpmaker stones are great for getting into tight spots like serra...

Re: Native Chief Lightweight!!!
If you have one handy, compare the Delica to your Chief to see where the point of contact would be. Thanks for the tip. I have a Lil Matriarch which is a Delica variant. The clip on that is about 1/16” shorter than what is on my Chief. So I don’t expect the long Lynch clip to be an improvement. But...

Re: Native Chief Lightweight!!!
Could you fill in the grip troughs around the clip contact area with epoxy? Possibly sand the upper sharp tips of the grip squares a bit, at the clip contact area? Yes, I think my first inclination is that black 2 part craft putty. I’m blanking on the name. RTV silicone could work and has the advan...

Honestly everything is fixable except the clip issue. Hope yours at least comes in an openable state.

Re: Native Chief Lightweight!!!
Took the knife apart. No sign of any debris or dust. While I had it open I tweaked the lock spring a bit. Put some oil in the pivot and on the “washer” part of the scales. Put it back together, adjusted pivot screws, and it’s smooth enough to open and close now. https://i.imgur.com/wpnbAXIl.jpeg Rei...

Re: Building a Custom Knife for Sal: CPM S60V
There is a photo against a ruler that suggests 12.125” but I’m just guessing that is what he meant by that photo. What a cool thing to do for Sal. We should all make knives for him. I’ve made a bunch of kitchen knives and I can already see OP’s one or two levels up from my skills. And lots of people...

Re: Native Chief Lightweight!!!
Yeah I wish I had caught this earlier. I’ve seen other brands screw that up but I basically trust Spyderco to get things right. And obviously no company is perfect. The tape trick works. I’m gonna carry it a bit and see how it goes. It’s a lot more knife than I usually like to carry, so if it isn’t ...

Re: Native Chief Lightweight!!!
On fiddling with this more the lock spring tension is really strong. This makes it stiffer than need be. But it’s definitely breaking in. But the pivot was torqued down so tight out of the box it was unusable. A deep carry clip won’t help the clip problem. It’s fundamentally an issue with the scales...

Re: Native Chief Lightweight!!!
Got my $100 Native Chief LW from the MAPnesty sale this week. I've wanted a Chief since the prototype was first shown off at a show like 10 years ago. The price was certainly right. So pretty excited when I got the package today... but... Ok first off the pivot is extremely stiff. I had to two hand ...

Re: Laser hardening
It's just not much of a problem to heat treat steel. You buy a heat treat oven and do the right temperature cycle. Quenching can be interesting so maybe if you figure out laser quenching that will help.

Re: Laser hardening
Well… heat treatment isn’t necessarily expensive at volume. You can put hundreds of blades in a batch in an oven or… laser them one at a time?

Re: Tax day MAP sale!
I didn’t even know MAPnesty days existed. If this happens every year then I need to plan around it. Woke up a little to late for the $80 Native Chief deal.
I’m a lot more of a Spyderco consumer at non-MAP pricing.

Re: Sage series collection - What's the next Sage?
We probably won't do anything with the "Cross-bar" Lock, as it seems to be very popular with a large number of Makers. It’s not a bad lock but I think CBB is better by far. Cross bar springs always strike me as a failure point waiting to happen. It may be an old lock at this point but the...

Just ordered a combo edge Native Chief LW for $100 from Knife Joy. Would have loved to get that $80 SE version but they’re all gone.

I really don’t understand how people run into “food prep” tasks outside of a kitchen so often that EDC knives need to touch food. Do you people lack teeth?

3 tests; Average = 59.7 This is typical. Old and new VG-10 the same. sal I appreciate you checking. I guess VG10 isn’t the slouch YouTube says it is This is the wrong conclusion to draw here. Most (all?) cutlery steels, including the cheapest 8CrMoV13, can hit 60 Rc. VG-10 can get as high as 62 I b...

My solution is to bring one of a pile of old slip joints I bought at a garage sale for a few bucks a piece. I don’t care if they rust or go overboard.

Re: Spyderco and hrc
Honestly everybody knows Spyderco knows how to achieve proper heat treatments. As do most reputable knife factories with most common steels. I think there’s a lot of hand wringing about hardness because 20 years ago heat treatment was a bit less optimal in cheaper knives.
