I have three Gerbers in different sizes and a wood handle splitter . This thread sounds interesting. MG2

Re: U.S. Steel bought out by Japan's Nippon Steel

It's only going to get weirder. Rocky Mountain got bought by Evraz years ago, and they are having a hard time selling because of our current relationship with Russia. No American companies seem to want them. I sincerely hope Nippon brings 480 ft rail to the USA. We may be at the start of a railroad ...

I took love my Fiskars. It's one of the best values on the market. Mine manages Missouri black walnut like a champ.

Re: Why is 1095 steel popular amongst knife makers?

Having known a number of competitors, there are many reasons I do not go on there, it is reality tv. You're not wrong about that.
Implying that 1095 shouldn't be used for swords though - that's ridiculous.
1095 can absolutely be used to make highly functional, large-scale cutlery.

Re: Why is 1095 steel popular amongst knife makers?

Euro swords with a spring temper usually are more in the 1050 to 1070 range though. I should zap a chunk of my folded w2 from Aldo and folded 1095 from Admiral just to see how much carbon burns out on orikaeshi tanren. I have to calibrate my spectrometer anyway. I doubt I burn 30% of the carbon out.

Re: Why is 1095 steel popular amongst knife makers?

I do when Dave Baker makes it at the very least. Curious though, are you saying it's just staged? It's reality TV... ;) Walter Sorrels uses a 1095/1050 mix ( averages to about 1070, but has nice, subtle contrast for hada effect) in beautiful Japanese style swords with high performance. He does stra...

Re: Any carbon steel Spyderco knives?

There were a caly 3 and 3.5 that were pure super blue (pure carbon steel) that came out almost a decade back. You may find one, but they're treasured by those who have them. Aside from that, most of the super blue models (delica, endura, dragonfly, stretch) are clad sanmai with stainless to keep the...

Re: Glock and Spyderco collaberation

If you have a Glock 43 and a Spyderco Introvert, overlay them and take a look. The 43 came out after the introvert, but the ergonomics show both companies' devotion to the study of ergonomics.

Being that those are my edc combo, it's nice for ambidextrous training.

I just signed in after a year or so, voted, and then read the thread to find out that old timers pretty much all voted the same. I don't think that's a coincidence.

Re: Who of you buys only Spyderco, no other brand knives?

I've only bought spydercos for a few years now. I have other brands in my kitchen, but my pocket has had a spyderco for two decades, with only a few exceptions. I make some knives I carry for a while. I'm not really missing out. I find that if it is worth doing, Spyderco will do it. Patience is key ...

Hi SolidState, Malcom Gladwell had a book out on pitchmen. Many of whom I knew. A good read, at least for me. I found most of Gladwell's book very good reads and I highly recommend them. I would suggest beginning with "Blink". Thanks for the suggestions, they are going in the queue.

Re: So what's your top 3 favorite steels? and why?

***understatement warning*** Bainitic L6 is a formidable steel! That's my favorite backing to martensite in a sword. It literally cannot be beaten. Howard Clark is a genius. My favorite 3 steels with a Spyderco are: 1. Hap-40 - somewhat stain resistant, and gets buttery-smooth edges that seem to bi...

Hi Sal, Are you buddies with those pitchmen you listed? I literally grew up watching infomercials, and would take a nap just to be able to be up late when they were on every summer during my gradeschool through highschool days. Pitch men apparently make up a surprising share of my heroes, and they s...

When I got it, my smell went strange but didn't disappear. My taste went weird - like how Stew's did above - metallic taste. It was like a hard flu mixed with a sinus infection with a nasty cough. The worst part was about a week into the illnesss the old stones started to ache like I was 13 again. I...

Made two kydex sheaths. I actually learned how to press kydex for this project, and have since made sheaths for l...

The Introvert is the answer to that. Hook a carabiner through the finger hole flipper thingy, so it can't open. The original prototype (and my personal version) have a hole in the flipper tab for carabiners. With a carabiner through that hole, you can push down on the handle to partially open the b...

Re: How about a Lava light?

I didn't buy a Spyderco between my Delica I got in 1997 and the Lava. The Lava inspired a three year binge on thousands of dollars of Spydercos until I decided that I needed to pay for my habit by designing my own. Lavas are dangerous, and make me think of KaliGMan. If you ask me, it has a strong fl...

Re: Caly 3 love?

As well, the Caly 3 & UKPK melt into my hand like no other "humped" Spydercos. So great job adapting the Caly's ergos, it was definitely a successful adaptation. If you're ever at a show with them, ask them to overlay many of their designs. You'll find that they use what works repeate...
