Re: Pattern Nicks on Blade Edge

Here is a video from Great Eastern Cutlery’s Factory tour – Part 1. About 13 minutes in you will see what appears to be a pair (left and right hand) Nicholas grinders in action.

Re: Pattern Nicks on Blade Edge

Was that a Nicholas grinding machine? Quirky, but reliable machines that replaced the Hemmings (first production blade grinding machine circa 1903) in the late 1940s. Superseded by Berger and Siepmann CNC blade grinders used today. The "nicks" in the edge were cause by a rogue (frayed/extr...

Interestingly, many of Sal's patents not only show what is eventually created, but also the innovative possibilities of what could be. True Butto...

Red Threadlocker always. ;) Never an issue. Never a problem. Repaired hundreds of Spyderco Clipits and thousands of other assorted brands since folders started being bolted together in the mid80s.

Re: Why are some tool steels laminated and others not?

I am not an English native speaker, so I am not entirely sure if I understand correctly: You mean "putting" the makers mark, specification of steel, "Seki City" or whatever on the blade does not work on very hard steels with "punching", but just with a laser, right? So...

Re: Why are some tool steels laminated and others not?

If I recall discussions with Sal/Eric correctly, it depends on whether the maker has/uses a laser to blank the blades. Non-laminated is to tough to fine blank (punch press) cleanly, hence the use of laminated. Also it may depend upon available steel inventory.

Re: Hitachi White Steel

I have two Murray Carter custom Santokus, one with White #1 and the other Aogami Super Blue. When I bought them from Murray, I asked him why he used both steels and what was the difference. He said that Japanese chefs, particularly sushi chefs, only use White steel as it takes the finest (sharpest) ...

Re: Clip Screw Question

Sounds like the previous owner stripped the holes in the liner. Unfortunate. Caveat Emptor.

Hopefully, Spyderco can fix it for you and won't charge too much.

Good Luck!

Re: Opinion : the Dragonfly 3 should look like the Byrd Robin 2

Sal designs continue to refine. Since its introduction 1993-4, the Dragonfly design has had three major modifications/versions as Sal's understanding of ergonomics and mechanical innovations have developed. The Robin 2 is a result of those continual design evolutions, somewhat like the C62 Navigator...

Re: Crowned spines

Easy to do, difficult to do well. There is a lot of steel to remove accurately to create a 180° radius. Even a squared spine takes a fair amount of skill to do by hand. A crowned spine takes a real craftsman.

Re: My non 90 degree sharpening

I would like to add; put your thumb on the spine of the blade. Stand back from the Sharpmaker about a foot. Sometimes, if you are looking down on the blade from directly above the left stone, and then move your hand to the right stone without changing your view, what looks to be vertical, might not...

Re: Cruwear/Smooth G10 Yojimbo Knifecenter exclusive

Is that really a crack or just a deeper line (scratch) from grinding caused by a carbide being torn out and momentarily stuck in the grinding wheel. Hard to see anything on the obverse side, cutting edge, or finger hole. Have you looked at it under magnification with a loupe? :thinking

Re: POLL: Shape of "Standard Mule" MT28P2

Different shape, look, and feel is great as I am all in favor of new variations, however, this is not exactly what the Mule concept is all about. All the same but different steel, so that when testing/using only one feature would not be the same as all of the others. In that way, the knife would be ...
