Re: SALT Liners

Trade secrets offer better protection than patents in many cases. Think Zildjian cymbals, Coca-Cola formula, Falcon 9 rockets. We want Spyderco to reap the rewards for their profound efforts at research and development. They are true innovators in a world crowded with copycats.

Re: The Astute

The Astute is curvy and rounded like the female body. I imagine that is why it feels feminine. It lacks points and hard angles (except for the blade tip) unlike many other Spyderco designs. I know, Captain Obvious, right?

I like the edge to handle ratio, too. Lots of utility in a compact package

Re: High carbide/hardness serrations??

I wouldn’t want Maxamet in SE due to low toughness. K390, on the other hand, has 3 out of 4 important qualities: hardness, toughness, and wear resistance. All it’s missing is stainlessness.

Re: new coating coming!

I’ve mostly avoided coated blades because I tend to modify my knives and don’t require light discipline for my uses. However, the notion of a permanent coating that lowers friction has my attention. Now it’s a potential aid to performance and I want to know more.

Check out the Dragonfly model. It’s small like you said, and has a mid back lock.

Re: Any recommendations?

Uralpilot, you don’t like liner locks and arthritis makes fine manipulation difficult. If I have that right, may I suggest the Stretch model? The mid-back lock is easy to unlock and the blade has a strong closing bias, so it won’t open in your pocket, nor will it fail to close fully when you close i...

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.

I bet they are fantastic cutters. Yes they are. For me it was worth the effort. Others will feel differently. I was at a work party lunch at church and a tomato was produced without a competent blade to cut it. I opened my SE Endela and the electrician scoffed… until he tried it. Made a convert tha...

So, is the ball ceramic on the Manix LW Salt? It makes sense if it is, from a corrosion standpoint.

Hey Marius, Thanx for the thread. Don't how I missed it back then, but I'm on it now. Great discussion. Hi Riclaw, Thanx for bumping it up. I'm with David in that I would like all of the serrations ground the same, but that's been much harder to do that one would think, because of the way serration...

Chapstick seems to hold up well. I think it’s a blend of wax and petroleum jelly.

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.

H-1 and LC200N and VG-10 were half or less the effort as K390. In fact, I reprofiled a saber-ground VG-10 SE Endura in less time than my FFG K390 Endura took me, and that was removing much more steel to reach 15 degrees. The scallops on my K390 Endura look much closer to how they looked when new as ...

Re: What is your favorite Delica variant?

I prefer the standard FFG VG-10 with a colorful FRN grip, currently have a green one. It’s plain, yet it functions as my gent’s knife. With clip removed it disappears in my dress pants, but ready for action if some matter needs separating.

I'm sure your right. It probably takes hours?
3-4 hours for the K390 Endura on the CBN rods.

Re: AI art knows Spyderco

I only see its value as ‘hey that’s a fun experiment’ but that’s it. I don’t think it should create “legitimate” content. And I believe it shouldn’t be intended to be “impressive” either. I suppose it’s impressive of the people who designed and engineered the technology. But what content the “a.i” ...

It is Cruwear, an excellent user steel. I’d just use it and relax in the knowledge that it’s not perfect and new anymore, which frees the mind to simply enjoy using the thing as the tool it is.

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.

I’m a knut who reprofiles his Spyderedges to 15 degrees soon after getting them. (K390 is not for the faint of heart!) The performance gain is worth it for me and in my uses they haven’t taken much damage. I always have the option to micro bevel at 20 degrees if the edge proves too fragile. One bene...

Swidgen,

I concur that your Delica appears to have rusted after cutting something. The ricasso behind the plunge appears unaffected. Some Bar Keeper’s Friend should fix you right up.
