The all-steel Estwing style handle under the head is very strong and simple, but it needs careful attention to weight and to shock absorption, else it becomes un-ergonomic Just a thought to share.

My own prejudice is for functional utility. Tacticool designs are usually clumsy at performing real-world utility tasks. As a carpenter, the light head on a medium-long handle is good because it is easy to carry and to generate speed on the swing. The first Americans figured this out a looooong time...

Welcome to the Forum! As far as powdered steels go, if I understand it correctly the whole point of them is to eliminate inconsistencies within the metal. Instead of being melted and cast, which would allow heavier elements to settle out as the metal cools, they are 'powdered' while still liquid. I...

I first learned about Spyderco in the early 1980's. A friend owned a knife shop in Denver and he showed me some very strange knives with holes in the blade. I remember one was a serrated rescue blade, which impressed me with its cleverness and ergonomics. I ended up buying a very early Sharpmaker fr...

On a single bevel edge you are better off stoning the burr away than stropping it. Why? Because stropping a flat bevel, it is very easy to dub over the edge. Just ask a fine woodworker about his chisels. Also, like FLYBYU44 says, an uneven bevel tends to veer off to one side in the cut. This sort of...

There are better substances than hairspray, which cannot be made durable or it would never shampoo out of a lady's hair. Superglue will work. Thin epoxy resin works. Polyurethane varnish (oil-based) will also work, just dip the handle in a jar with 50% varnish in 50% mineral spirits, shake off the e...

Apart from the big question, WHY use ceramics when we have steel? IMHO, one trouble with ceramics in folders or pocketknives as opposed to kitchenware, from a legal point of view, would be you can guarantee that it will invite unnecessary comments and criticsm from the type of people who don't beli...

I think the demeanor of the person or the manner in which the knife is used or deployed can affect the FOF, too. I've seen people dispense skittish looks at classmates who used a SAK to trim threads, while the same class laughed when our prof asked for a knife to cut some tubing and I spydie-droppe...

I have routed a fair bit of micarta and it cuts like wood, only harder. G-10 will dull the carbide faster because of the glass, but it also will cut fine by router. One nice thing is that neither one is going to melt and stick to the cutter like acrylic or ABS. Dust collection is a real good idea, a...
