Re: Texas Knife Laws

I don't see anything state-wide that disallows a balisong. Local ordinances are in effect as the preemption law failed to pass so you will still have to be aware of those. The big ones to watch out for is the ban on locking blades in San Antonio and the 3-inch maximum blade length in Corpus Christi....

Re: Spyderco Tomahawk?

Well, looks like the Tactical one is coming out first... the Szabohawk. I'm very intrigued by this one and am wondering about the utility of the faceted/bearded cutting edge and whether it would be good for EDC cutting/chopping. Being as this has been in the works almost forever and a day, I think ...

Re: Janisong not available in US?

Thanks for clearing that up with us, Mr. Glesser. I had a pretty hard time imagining such a great design simply falling through the cracks forever due to import shenanigans.

Re: Janisong not available in US?

Benchmade sells US-made balisongs all the time. Make it here in the States and it's a non-issue. In fact, Texas just lifted the ban on switchblades so Spyderco would probably have a good market for a balisong-type knife you can play with without risking your digits quite so much.

Re: Ok, what did you see in the new catalogue that you need?

The Reverse and Ronin 2 for me. Honestly a bit leery of the 2mm blade thickness on the Ronin 2 despite it being a high-speed/low-drag steel. Quite certain it cuts like a demon, though, being so thin. I'm also not really understanding why Spyderco would want to have to buy separate orders of the CTS ...

Try the Delica. Just under 3-inch blade, very reasonably priced, proven design, and an excellent steel with a well-done heat treat. Slim, light, plenty tough for 95%+ of EDC knife uses, and it has a readily available trainer if you ever get the hankering for some training.

Well, I happen to carry a G17 magazine in my G17.

Weird, huh?

My two knives that I regularly carry are a Swick 2 and a Street Beat. I use them for utility but, hey, a Man's gotta do what a Man's gotta do if it comes to defensive use.

100 Production Clinch Picks + Trainers sold in less than 24 hours...

Just giving y'all the heads up that CCdefense sold out of their initial run of 100 Clinch Picks and trainers without any marketing about the release and the word being spread on a single limited-membership forum . Another 100 should be arriving today or so to keep the ball rolling on getting these t...

Thanks again, Mr. Janich!

I would like to thank you again for an excellent self-defense resource, Mr. Janich. I'll be teaching a free 10-hour self-defense course at my church which will have Shivworks-inspired Contact Management, empty hand, tactical pen, and tactical flashlight sections. Your "Focused Impact" vide...

Not really. Just about any well heat-treated steel of good quality will serve a person well as a knife blade. You have to sharpen some steels more than others, but for the basic job of cutting stuff, just about anything will do when it comes right down to it.

Reverse Fixed blade: I’m not sure if I got the name right, but there was a fixed blade in the case sporting a 3.5” (aprox) wharncliff/ hawkbill hybrid blade identical to the P’kal folder but slightly longer. It’s a joint collaboration between Southnarc and Mike Janich, and what makes this blade so ...

I was pretty much gobsmacked by the price of the Enuffs. $25 *higher* than a similar semi-custom in S35VN for a VG10 *production* knife? Now, I fully realize that street price will be lower, but that's still mighty steep there. Guess Japan is worse off for costs than I thought post-tsunami. A bit bu...

Not surprised by the Puukko at all. Gorgeous knife. It has the hole which turned a whole bunch of people off, the steel was a bit 'iffy' due to to it's high machining costs and relative difficulty in sharpening except at home, and the cost was simply out of many folks price ranges for a Puukko-type ...

Stainless throws a spark fine, actually. The main issue with firesteels and stainless knives is that most stainless knives have the edges of their spines slightly rounded off because, well...they're not designed with firesteels in mind. As for my vote of "no", there are a gazillion makers ...
