Hi Pyrolyzer-- That's a cool observation. I've noticed, too, that as I've gained more experience I've been better able to see the similarities among various systems, rather than just the differences. Seems that though there may be a lot of paths on which to begin, they all eventually (at least poten...

NOW we're on the right track!

Let's all lobby Paladin Press to get us a training video.

On second thought, we'd probably all just wind up caught in the debate between the Original Filipino Prisonfighting instructors and the Filipino Prisonfighting Concepts instructors.

Back to you, fellas.

Hey, Ethan--

Always fun to have you on board. You and Thane are great to train with, not to mention highly entertaining! (As a matter of fact, even when you're not there we tell stories about you guys to liven things up.)

Good training to you,
Vince

To answer Mejoomeok's question, I carry a Native (the American version) as my primary carry. It's the only knife I like that I have a trainer version of currently (my friends at the Spyderco factory helped me out with that way-back-when). I use a stainless-steel-barrelled ballpoint pen as my 'weak-s...

MeJoomeok-- If you haven't checked out Michael Janich's site yet, you should. He's got articles and pictures of not only the Yojimbo (both the production version and a cool Mike Snody Prototype), but also several other of his designs/collaborations. This link'll get you right to the Yojimbo page: ht...

Hi, ronin203--

Nope, the Yojimbo isn't out yet. No reliable word on when it will be. . .estimates keep getting pushed back.

But stay tuned to this forum--I'm sure you'll hear about it here when it does finally hit the market!

Hi Dave K, I've heard that the Tempest may not be available much longer, so if you wait too long to decide you may just find that your choice has been made by default! Seriously, though, the two models you're considering do vary quite a bit in feel, carry options, materials, blade shape (especially ...

Hi, shootist16-- I was wondering about the "chi" thread. . .that could've gotten messier than the one on knife throwing! Re: the Chinook, there's not a video dedicated solely to that model. While it is a great knife it's not so specialized in design that it needs its own curriculum. That m...

Hi Martin--

I guess I need more explicit directions. I looked at gunting-museum.com and clicked on "Custom Guntings" and didn't find anything by Owen Wood.

I used to work with Owen and really admire his knives. I'm eager to see what he did with the Gunting.

Thanks,

One thing that's not apparent until you've gone through the MBC series (or at least a given level) multiple times is the continuing evolution of the system. Mike works hard with his assistant instructors Matt Z. and Mike R. to tweak the curriculum and the way it's presented. The core remains a const...

I'll second what Qship said. A Yojimbo trainer is essential because most of us have no other way of approximating that model (one that folds AND locks, anyway) in our training--i.e., we can't build one ourselves. Fixed blade knives are easier to mock up. A production version is nice to have availabl...

Hello franknife, I looked at a Scorpius last week at Spyderco's Factory Outlet store. The knife has quite a unique handle shape, which I found to feel particularly good when held in reverse grip. I'm not a fan of steel handles, so I asked whether a variation made with G-10 or FRN is planned. The sto...

Hey, Travis--

I recall back when you practiced MBC you used your pet dog as your training partner. Make sure you go easy on her with the throwing 'til she gets the hang of throwing them back, eh?

To all who've posted,

Thanks again, fellas. There's no better teacher than experience. This is one area in which I'm trying to AVOID experience, however, so it's valuble to be able to benefit to some degree from yours.

Hey, Travis-- My own throwing experience is quite limited so far, but Mike Janich is an expert on the subject (big surprise, eh?). I've got Mike's "Making it Stick" video on the subject and in it he demonstrates throwing fixed-blades, folders, ballpoint pen, needlenose pliers, a tire iron ...

Jim, Rex, et. al-- I appreciate your willingness to share your experience with us here on the forum. MBC surely is fun to practice, but as the most critical goal is self-protection I find your (and other) reality-checks valuble to bear in mind at each training session. My current question is: what t...

Earthworm-- The Airweights reportedly offer a "45% weight reduction"--while offering "98% of the striking potential"--compared to the steel version. That'd mean the 16-inch Airweight would weigh around 7-8 ounces. For the sake of comparison, that's in the same ballpark as the Spy...
