Very much appreciate your helpful responses. I'll have to check out some the knife shops mentioned and definitely try to score some kitchen cutlery. I was aware of the knife laws in Japan but certainly not to the extent that you all mentioned. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm going to Japan in mid April for the cherry blossom season. Wondering if any forumites know of some good Spyderco stores I should visit while there. I've heard that Seki City is the cutlery capital, and of course many fantastic Spydercos are made there, but not sure I'm going to venture in that ...
