Re: New Forum Knife?

The closer they get to a Caly 3.5 super blue, the more likely I would buy it. I don't care what they say on the blade. Any wood burl scales, like the fore mentioned Buckeye Burl, or better yet, Amboyna would be worth $100 more.

Re: MT22P - Mule Team Fixed Blade with RWL 34

Well, I ordered mine and look forward to its slow arrival. UPS ground is similar to Pony Express when you live in Florida. Only other complaint with the Mule Team is that when #22 arrives, I will still only have 21 mules to display. (The others are in use.) I think it was #14 that died before being ...

Re: Weird Nano-Oil on DF2 result

I tried Nano-0il for awhile.... and for a while it was my lubricant of choice. I don't use it much anymore. Actually, I find it much more important to keep the knives clean. Lubrication is secondary for me. Chris Reeve, known for precision knife tolerances, recommends fluorinated grease. But, you re...

Re: I will now EDC only SE for 6 months.

EvilD, You should allow yourself the same opt out as every one else. Or at least consider another knife along with your EDC because that Ladybug aint goin to cut it. After years of EDC my Caly 3.5, I switched to the Nilakka with great satisfaction, but after a while, I missed the best EDC I ever own...

Re: What do you DIY? : A hobby thread

Wow, interesting post. Like EvilD, I used to fix my own cars. Now, I lift the hood and don't recognize a thing. Also, did all the plumbing on our recently remodeled kitchen. Pretty well acquainted with HVAC having my own set of gauges and tools and having worked in the frozen food industry for almos...

Re: Polished Carbon fiber dings! Rubicon help!

If you have the time and patience, a set of Micro-Mesh Pads is far superior to using sandpaper. A set of nine pads start at 1500 grit and progress up to 12,000 grit. A 12,000 grit finish will not leave any marks detectable by the naked eye. Many places carry Micro-Mesh pads. They are available from ...

Re: What grit do you consider coarse or fine?

I mostly stop at 1K for everyday use. It is toothy enough to get most jobs done. When you move on beyond 1K, it will look better, and if you like a mirror finish on your knife edge it looks great. But, for me, it is not worth all the extra work for an EDC knife. Your question asks for an answer to c...

Re: Caly 3.5 discontinued?

First off.... I find it really hard to believe that Spyderco has discontinued the Caly 3.5. Having carried it for years, my recent favorite being the Super blue, I don't worry, as I have back ups now that will outlast me. But the Deacon gives me great hope here. He says: "or switching to a diff...

Re: New Spyderco Nilakka*

Thank you MacLaren. I didn't mean anything negative here. The Nilakka has actually become my EDC replacing (at least temporarily) my Caly 3.5 which has been in my pocket for a few years now. If they made the Nilakka in Super Blue, it would definitely be my permanent replacement. I suppose we knife n...

Re: New Spyderco Nilakka*

I, also find it to be one of my favorites due to the F&F , FFG, and amazingly sharp S30V out of the box. I have to admit that the scales were not comfortable in my hand so I removed the clip. I never use the clips. And, I added a peice of teak wood to the end where the clip attaches. Then I made...

Re: Caly 3.5 or PM2?

I have to vote for the Caly 3.5. It too will handle everything you plan to do. And it will probably feel better in your hand and feel light in your pocket. Manix = 6.1 oz. PM2 = 3.9 oz. Caly 3.5 = 3.1 oz.

Re: 3 Spydies that you really wanted to like but didn't in t

Back in February, I took a shot at the Nilakka saying it was the number one Spyderco that I wished I had not bought. The sharp edges on the scales were just not comfortable. I finally replaced the scales with a pair I made from Teak wood. I also removed the clip as I almost never use the clips. I sc...

Re: Opinel knives

Some of the most fun that I have had with Opinel is playing with their "Raw Handle Series." I tried my hand (for the first time) at wood carving. Then later, and more recently I decided that the handle would be perfect if I could copy my Caly 3.5. That was going fairly well until I realize...

Re: The Sharpest?

The sharpest EDC user has been my Superblue Caly 3.5. Out of the box sharpest I just can't remember but the least sharp out of the box was a recently purchased Double Bevel VG-10. After reprofiling, sharpened to 30 degrees and stroping with a Stropblock, it rivels my SB Caly 3.5.

Re: Tuf-Glide/cloth, updated opinion

One more in agreement! I used Tuf-Glide on Super-blue and found that it did not work....period. Not as a lubricant, as I gave up on that a long time ago, but it does not stop a patina unless you use the knife for just opening the mail. Several times I resorted to shining up the blade with flitz. Fin...
