Southard, Chokwe ... musings

Taking out the trash this morning I was cutting up a big double corrugated box with my Southard and suddenly realized that I've been using this knife for six years. Where has the time gone? I'm down to about two dozen Spydercos and some customs and the Southard was one of the last ones I bought. Gre...

Re: Why the Manix in Maxemet?

"Artisan" steels may cost a LOT more largely because of low production quantities. Ramp up production and the price falls. If Carpenter thinks this is a winner they have an incentive to make a big batch, sell it at rock bottom pricing to knife makers with the agreement that they will get it out to t...

Re: Sailing: Spyderco Finishes First in Race to Alaska

Cool event. The story was on the front page of yesterday's paper because they started at Port Townsend, about twenty miles from me. I'll try to watch the first part next year, either from near Port Townsend or Victoria.

Re: Can't decide which Military

I've been carrying the black combo bladed Millie lately. I think the combo edge works well on this length blade. Since I back pocket carry the TI is ideal since the thicker handle keeps it upright with just a bandana beside it.

Re: Cutting the Cord: Life Without Television

We're cut the cord several times over the years. Currently we've had no TV, local, cable, satellite since early 2008.

Internet only since then.

Re: China

For those of you that understand basic economics and have a grasp of statistical trends: Years ago I pointed out that the shift in manufacturing away from China was happening for three main reasons. The rapidly rising cost of maufacturing primarily due to labor cost doubling each decade, lack of pro...

"Other than more Companies from overseas are starting to manufacture products here."

So you see it as completely insignificant whether US companies manufacture in the US or overseas. You are entitled to your opinion but I doubt anyone else agrees with you.

Re: China

Wow, how is it that you are able to ignore the fact that something IS happening, that it HAS been happening for a number of years? To go back to one of many examples I gave years ago, GE invested a BILLION dollars in it's Louisville production facility and is bringing back ALL major appliance manufa...

Re: China

This shift began about five years ago and will take decades. I'm not getting "too carried away" by pointing out what is actually happening. This is happening under current policy. Changes could cause faster or slower change.

Things in China could move much more quickly.

Re: China

One more point. The efforts to build the Chinese economy for the long-term are doomed as long as there is no protection for intellectual property. The rip-off economy of China gave them a decades long growth spurt but ultimately soured companies on investing in China and is preventing domestic innov...

China

Several years back I made a number of posts indicating that the tide had turned and that jobs were flowing back to the US from Asia and that Chinese exports were starting an inevitable decline. I just heard the other day that Warren Buffet, the smartest investor that I know of, has been buying compa...

Re: Being politically correct

Many good comments. Political correctness itself has been politicized so that many see it exclusively in terms of what the "other side" is doing. I've always hated it going back to when I started college in 1973 and couldn't get over how prevalent it was. The fact that politics and religion cannot b...

Re: 2015 Forum Knife Announcement

Very nice forum knife and kudos for doing this for the forum, but I'm sorry to see another Native. It's the third Native in a row and suffers in comparison to Eric's opulent 2013 Forum Knife. Since the 2013 forum knife was more expensive it isn't surprising that I like every aspect of it better. I c...

Re: Back where I started. Lil Temperance.

The Lil' Temp was my third must have Spydie. My first Spydie, a Delica convinced me that Spyderco made functionally fine knives. The first that grabbed me aesthetically was the Caly Jr. I had to buy one and found it worked as good as it looked. Then came the Kiwi. I ended up buying two with differen...

Yes, Spyderco listens.

Re: Is there a Para 3?

I just don't get this. In the Spyderco naming system a Para 3 would replace a knife that has such high demand that it took a year for production to catch up. It has never been said the 3 was a replacement. As I alluded to, Spyderco has never used the same model name with a version number attached t...
