RAT cutlery RC-3 or Izula. 1095 steel. Holds and edge like no other. Easy to sharpen and the warranty is superb. Other wise use a D-2 or ZDP 189 blade. The best for edge retention, but you will need a bit of your time to resharpen these. A DMT diamond stone works well on hard steels. Or the cheapest...

Protect your knife rights
This is a template you send to your elected officials: [Date] Dear Senator or Representative [insert name]: I am asking for your support to oppose U.S. Customs’ proposal to re-interpret the Switchblade Knife Act of 1958 – Customs proposes to criminalize modern assisted-opening knives by defining the...

Sharpened false edge
You should only do this on fixed blades with a hard sheath. You will cut yourself.

Sharpening in a pinch
If worse came to worse, you can use the bottom of a ceramic coffee cup for a sharpener. Concrete would also work on axe blades, as long as it was wet.

flashlight
I purchased a Dorcy LED light at Sears for about 25 bucks. About the size of a mini-mag light, but with more girth. Very bright. Batteries last forever. It has a strobe feature as well. You can't beat it. A lot of the Surefire lights eat batteries. This thing takes 3 AAA.

Get a good ceramic rod like a crock stick. Use your finger carefully and get a good feel for the curve. You might want to practice on a cheap knife first, if your hands are unsteady. Once you feel comfortable, use the rod and start from the base and move to the tip. Feel the curve and the bevel. The...

Leaf springs for Khukuri
These would be perfectly ideal for khukuris. They are usually made from 5160 steel, which is a great alloy. Leaf springs have been bent and worn, so the carbides are more uniform. Ranger Knives use this steel. Easy to resharpen, doesn't chip, and easy to heat treat as well. You can do it in a your b...

Spyderco should make a something like the Toollogic device. It should have a Swedish firesteel in it, and a water tight compartment to store other goods.

Swedish knives
For the money you can't beat a Frost Mora knife. They are tough as **** and easy to resharpen. The carbon steel versions hold an edge longer, but the stainless is great as well. I heard the laminated ones are the best, but I haven't purchased one yet. I own Swedish military model acquired through Am...

Cold Steel Khukuri
I purchased one of these and I was not impressed. The black coating covered the bevel. I had to run a ceramic rod over it to get rid of it and put a decent edge on it. Even after a good edge was applied, it didn't cut well. There were a lot of nicks in it after chopping some elephant ears and other ...
