I was remembering light years past and thought this expose should be brought forward to current time to be shared.

Re: Schempp Kukri?

Khurkries are interesting and have several evolved geometries. These geometries all promote balance, longitudinal and rotational and the cutting abilities of these tools. There are many overlapping similarities in these geometry between a khukuri and even though a much different profile a Japanese K...

Re: Schempp Kukri?

I have been working on a Hmong blade in an unusual folding version. It is a large folder capable of light chopping! I hope to be able to present this concept to Spyderco by the Blade show in Atlanta. I have some other pieces on the bench for a cutting experiment for Sal and develop more to finish fo...

Re: Schempp Kukri?

There are some great attributes of Khukris that I have great respect. I have used some of these attributes in my designs, why reinvent the wheel? One of the best I have seen is designed by Jason Knight, a true gentleman and a very accomplished designer and knife maker. Jason an I share a love and an...

Re: Trying to understand the attributes of negative blade rake.

I’ll try again I got timed out on this post on my first go around, here’s my list! 1) better blade purchase 2) less wrist action more grip durability! 3) large muscle groups of forearm and shoulder do the work! 4) in reverse grip edge out blade is 90 degrees to forearm for better puncturing! 5) in r...

Re: The Return of the Persian

I think there is a lot of research done on doing a sprint of the Kris, maybe a Persian will follow. Some of the skilled artisans have retired that did the original work on these knives. COVID has not helped this process!

Re: Schempp Rock 'Chopper' idea

For handle material I like either horse stall mat or neoprene shoe sole material. I've been using oring material for pin stock with 18-20 pins that hold the rubber slabs on on the tang. This eliminates hard or hot spots in high impact cutting. I have used rubber inserts dovetailed into the tang that...

Re: Schempp Rock 'Chopper' idea

I used 5/16 thick steel and then grind a reverse distal taper the thickest steel is about 2" back from the tip, the end of the tang is about 1/8" thick. I grind the false edge through the handle. This geometry moves weight out toward the tip and toward the edge. It has rotational balance a...

Re: Schempp Rock 'Chopper' idea

My cutter knives were lighter than most with a weight of about 18 ounces with a reverse distal taper, putting as much weight as possible toward the tip. Most of them had a false edge moving weight toward the edge. With a negative blade angle the blade purchased the medium to be cut not slipping away...

Ribbed steels work like smooth steels. The give more pressure but they don't have an abrasive action.

Re: Why no steel strops?

Steeling is a burnishing action for straightening a rolled or deformed edge. These work much better on Carbon steel and Stainless steels like H1 or VG 10. On stainless steels the flexing the edge back and forth an often lead to micro edge chipping that dulls the knife. A steel properly used should b...
