Re: Show your Bugs and Critters

Aladinsane, you probably do have mountain lions in the Smokies. They not only exist in every state in America, but also exist from Alaska to the southernmost tip of South America. I believe their latin name is Felis Concolor. I could be wrong. They are shy creatures with very sensitive ears and ...

I know that this is more than a bit late, but I’m like Steve Martin’s character in “My Blue Heaven” “ I believe in overtipping.”
We don’t eat out much, but when we do I make it a point to connect with a restaurants employees in one way or another ( eye contact, verbal communication, or other more ...

Hi Vivi, it’s funny - I just tried to blow the hair off my phone screen! Wiping it didn’t work either!
Just got my new Sharpmaker today - on my birthday no less.
My personal learning curve begins.

Remember that old saying “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”
That’s also the definition of fishing.

Re: Show your Bugs and Critters

Mountain Lions in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
They took a big hit in the 2020 Fire. But I’ve seen game camera footage of at least two since then. I’ve been a cat person since birth. My earliest memory is of my father pulling a Siamese kitten off my chest - I cried because it was a warm purring thing ...

I was a flashaholic for years. Recently I became
a knifeaholic. Knifeaholics are 100 times as fanatical as flashaholics. That said, I like 4sevens and Olight, plus Nitecore , Fenix, Acebeam and a few others. Rechargeable batteries are cheapest in the long run.
Olight Baton 4 is a good carry light ...

Re: Taking apart knives - part 2

Ok, this is the first pocket knife I’ve ever taken apart. It worked out great. Bear with me here. I purchased a Native 5 in S110v. It’s a beautiful little EDC for me. One of my nephews on a visit gave me a hideously expensive flashlight, so in return I offered him my Native. He said “No - send it to ...

Hi Aladinsane,
Yeah, we’re doing great, it was August 2020 in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
I salvaged a few kitchen knives, but none of my Spydercos. I’m probably going to get a Pacific Salt, even though I don’t saltwater fish anymore. I’m not sure what steel to get, though. I’m on the notification ...

Re: Compendium of tips for sharpening serrated knives

Just to be clear, those “perpendicular” instructions were for tapered diamond rods.
I had a Sharpmaker, but lost it along with virtually everything else in a forest fire. I found three out of the four ceramic rods in the rubble and have been using them to touch up my knives. I currently have a new ...

Re: Compendium of tips for sharpening serrated knives

OK, you got me started, I warned you not to.
On a website of a well known sharpening supplies seller, I found this advice for sharpening serrated blades. “With the sharpener in one hand and the knife in the other, use a few, short, light, back and forth strokes to sharpen the beveled edge of each ...

Re: Some late-night fake finding (links included), come join!

Wow! You say you didn’t have much to do, but you found a whole pile of fake sellers.
The most prevalent giveaway is the ridiculously low prices on all of these sites.
My question is - are the photos taken from Spyderco’s site or other authorized sellers. I ask because they look so authentic. The ...

Hi Gull Wing,
I understand the “ease of sharpening” wish.
For more years than I wish to state, I have been the worst sharpener in the world. If I sharpened a butter knife, after I was done if you wanted to cut butter, you would not only have to heat the knife, but you would also have to heat the ...
