Re: General Byrd question on fit, finish & feel

I own a G10 Dragonfly, a G10 Robin 2, a FRN wharnie Robin 2 I got for a blade swap ( see the results here https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?t=97477 ), and I've handled a G10 Meadowlark 2. The G10 lockback Byrds are fantastic, 90% of the value of their Spyderco analogues for about 30% the cost ...

The main thing is would it be possible to keep it hollow grind like that of the VG-10 version instead of the sabre grind of the Cruwear version?
I think there are new production CQI versions of the FRN+VG10 Centofante with a hollow grind, so it should be possible.

Gayle Bradley 1 and Air in some stainless super steel. Magnacut , LC200N or 20CV

The Air is one of the models I most regret missing, and a stainless option would IMO be even better than the original. I'd love a LW option too, since it's such a good design that it's appealing even without the ...

Re: CBBL for a "choil-less" Native?

Thanks to everyone for their input, and especially to Nick for those helpful illustrations.

As I see it, there are a few problems and a few solutions.

CBBL for a "choil-less" Native?

In previous discussions about designing a choil-less Native 5 or "Mini/Midsized-Bodacious", people have commented that a backlock wouldn't work from a packaging standpoint. I haven't seen sketches explaining this, but the argument is that a choil-less blade, choil-less handle and back-lock mechanism ...

Nice! Looking forward to seeing the pics. Did the swap require any modifications or special tools?

You can see the pics and description of the results in this post: https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?t=97477

No modifications or special tools, just a torx driver and a plastic pry tool to ...

Re: KOTY24 - Your knive of the year 2024?

For me it's the Magnacut UKPK Salt. Partly because I've been waiting so long for it to come out, but mostly because it's a perfect example of what Nick Shabazz calls "boring, in a good way". The weight, ergos, manipulation, edge retention, corrosion resistance, toughness, legality, carry... nothing ...

Re: Any updates on the future in-house coating?

I would be very interested to hear more about the new coating as well. Supposedly there are pvd style coatings that are even more wear resistant than dlc.

I thought it was the opposite. PVD being lower cost, but lower durability and thicker application... DLC being thinner with higher ...

Re: Does this look like a Robin?

Looks more like a woodpecker to me. The beak is too straight and narrow, and the ruffed head is wrong. Here's a couple reference pics for American and European robins, respectively.

A successful Robin 2 blade swap

I already had a G10 Robin 2 that I really like (in fact, I like it much better than my G10 Dragonfly, owing to the better, more Delica-like ergonomics). I wanted to see if I could swap blades from the FRN Robins, since they are about half the price and come in a variety of blade styles. It worked ...

Re: A Lil Bodacious would be cool

I'd love a Native-sized Bodacious with a back lock, though I'm not sure if it's possible to have the cutting edge go so far down and still have a kick to keep the edge from crashing into the lockbar when closed.

Re: Is it possible to swap blades between FRN and G10 Robin 2?

So, it turns out you can swap a blade from a wharncliffe frn Robin 2 into a G10 Robin 2... And it mostly works.

I'll post an update with pics in a few days.

Re: Is there a BYRD in your pocket??

I started collecting knives of all brands and styles in late 2006. I bought my first byrd Robin in early 2008. Like many of us here, I've had hundreds of knives pass through my hands since then.

Also like many of us, I rotate my EDC knives on a regular basis. Every time I carry this Robin, I ask ...

Re: Is it possible to swap blades between FRN and G10 Robin 2?

Thanks for your reply, Switchback. It's actually quite helpful information, because if the blades from FRN and titanium Robin 2's fit a FRN Robin 1 well enough (with lockup issues possibly solved by swapping the lockbars), that tells me it is likely that swaps between different Robin 2's should work ...

Is it possible to swap blades between FRN and G10 Robin 2?

I have a linered G10 Robin that I really like, I was thinking of getting a wharncliffe FRN version to swap the blades. Does anyone know if this can be done successfully? I assume I'll have to swap the lockbar too.

Bonus question: Is the blade and lock of the titanium Robin also swappable between ...

Re: VG10 Wear Resistance

Someone told me they used a VG10 folder to cut through the top of a steel paint can with no visible damage to the edge and this is proof of great edge holding and wear resistance. Is that a realistic test or many other alloys can do that, including 8Cr13MoV?

You should tell this person about ...

Re: VG10 Wear Resistance

I assume the Al Mar has the most sharpenings on it, since it's older and there's no data for the factory edge. I think the issue here is that the Stretch still has fatigued/overheated steel at the edge. That's why testers like Outpost76 do several full sharpenings in preparation for tests, to see ...
