Re: Community Sharpening Journal

I'll take needing to flatten for faster cutting, and constant exposure to fresh abrasive. All stones will need be flattened or dressed eventually. The sintered Spyderco stones don't dish, but they're slow, and can burnish edges. I just use them to microbevel and burr removal I don't think something...

Re: Sharpening Para 3s, I can't reach the very bottom of the edge! Any advice?

If you watch starting at 2:27 minutes into video you'll see what I'd generally do on something like this. Anytime you have any part of the blade that you need to reduce width on is best done by grinding perpendicular with a hard bonded stone as shown in video. The Sharpmaker Rods can work well if no...

Re: Will Factory Switch Blades/Scales Between Knives? (Same Model)

What we are talking about is the complex relationship between individual parts and that is what I am saying I don't believe I qualify for not knowing the differences they may have made over the years. Sharpening a knife is easy too but I don't expect just anybody will be able to identify the subtle...

Re: Will Factory Switch Blades/Scales Between Knives? (Same Model)

I'm mostly mind blown that he's most overly technical person around, trashing everyone on their sharpening abilities, or lack there of according to him...yet he's afraid to attempt the simplest of tasks of owning a knife. This is bizarre. At no point did I express fear, I simply try to seek informa...

Re: Will Factory Switch Blades/Scales Between Knives? (Same Model)

Perhaps overstated but it seems there are critical dimensions on certain part interfaces that may prevent blade swaps at the very least. I just don't tend to jump to thinking I know something without requesting further opinions on the matter. https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/para-3-questions-rep...

Re: Will Factory Switch Blades/Scales Between Knives? (Same Model)

I do not feel qualified to disassemble and reassemble them myself in a way that I believe would guarantee safe function of the knives. Are you saying you aren’t qualified to use a screw driver? This isn’t a car. Anyone can take them apart and put them back together. What we are talking about is the...

Re: Will Factory Switch Blades/Scales Between Knives? (Same Model)

Doing blade/scale swaps are a lot easier than properly sharpening a blade, just saying. Was wondering if someone was going to make a comment along these lines! Really though, pretty mind blowing. It's kind of like being a computer programmer...but not knowing how to turn the computer on :grimace I ...

Re: Will Factory Switch Blades/Scales Between Knives? (Same Model)

it's really not that hard to take them apart and reassemble them. there are plenty of videos for tips out there on youtube. it's a good way to get to know your knives. the most important thing to remember is be careful with the screws. you definitely don't want to strip them. That's not what I'm mo...

Re: Will Factory Switch Blades/Scales Between Knives? (Same Model)

Short answer, no. Long answer, probably not. Spyderco practices CQI, Constant Quality Improvement. They make changes where and when they are needed based on real-world feedback. Most of these changes go unnoticed and undocumented, with the end result that parts may or may not interchange between tw...

Will Factory Switch Blades/Scales Between Knives? (Same Model)

I have several knives that I'd like different combinations of blade and handle material but do not feel qualified to disassemble and reassemble them myself in a way that I believe would guarantee safe function of the knives. Say I was to send in two Native Chief's to Golden for work and asked with a...

Re: Native Chief Lightweight!!!

After reading this I'm curious to test my bd1n polestar for toughness now. I've always liked diamond stones for bd1n to shape the nitrides. I notice a difference in edge longevity whenever I do that. I only use diamonds so can't tell much. I'd be interested to see what kinds of resulsts you get fro...

Re: Native Chief Lightweight!!!

I apex and reduce burr on every stone, before going to the next... And I let the stone do the work, not my arm ;) I sharpen knives daily, in any steel from simple carbon to Maxamet. Some people don't know anything about anything and will cry they have an issue with their knife without even apexing ...

Re: Native Chief Lightweight!!!

I know how to sharpen, I know this is not a comment to denigrate my skills or anything, but I won't talk about damage if it is due to me not being able to reach an apex or reduce then get rid of the burr ^^. I use venev Cerberus Dog and venev Pegasus stones. I have a WS Precision Adjust that I modd...

Re: Native Chief Lightweight!!!

Can't wait for the SPY27 ! Really enjoy that steel. I know people told me I should try BD1N again (only had a Manix LW and it chipped a lot, even after 2 reprofilings and a couple of sharpenings in between). Maybe both are in my future then ;) Well how did you sharpen exactly and reprofile in those...

Re: S30V, S45VN or S90V. Is one of these better?

Except most of us have neither the equipment nor the inclination to take these steels down to "very acute and highly polished edges." Whether they are brittle under those conditions is moot because 15 dps and a 320 grit edge serve our purposes quite nicely. My point was not that you shoul...

Re: S30V, S45VN or S90V. Is one of these better?

I own a number of knives, fixed and folding, in S30V from Spyderco, Strider, and White River Knives, as well as from several custom knife makers and have used those knives for close on 20 years. None of them have shown any tendency to chip in normal use, except maybe the factory edge on my Nilakka,...
