Re: Thoughts on Hogue Deka?

My son beat on that Deka for four months. It was still sharp when he gave it back to me. I got some GOAT scales in extended version with no clip holes as I only use a lanyard. I will probably order a Native Salt as that is my preferred Spyderco, and then refit the blade into a properly scaled Native...

Re: Get me excited about M398

IMHO burrs when sharpening are not going to happen on hard steels. A steel that sharpens without burrs is my preference. I know it is hard enough not to deform with the miniscule amount of pressure one applies when sharpening.

He was up working on his boat and his new business. I presented him with the knife. He loves it.

Re: Fishing

I started with a 20 inch fat tire so I can ride on sand beaches. Took out the weak rear motor and added a Cyclone kit. I use a folding garden cart towed behind the bike to hold all my tackle and rods. That is a Johnny Bass 100 in the background with a brushless trolling motor in the well. I travel ...

Thanks to TTfultimer for the tip on the $14 sheath, I tracked down what looks like the item in question and will give it a try.
I trimmed the sheath just a bit, and use a lanyard on the knife.

Re: Fishing

Fishing gear update: New Bike! Just picked up this Specialized Roll Low Entry to set up as a “Cape Cod Canal Fishing Bike.” The canal is about 7 miles long with a multi-use service road on each side. Parking along the canal can be difficult to find at times so people don’t always have the luxury of...

Pete got good results using a blunt 17 degree edge. Steeltoes above found a sharp 11 degree edge really improved performance. Maybe Pete will try an Unleashed test.

Re: The Mule Thumb Ramp

Scales made with my ideal ramp, gap filled with sanding dust/epoxy mix. If you look closely at the top view you can see the filler. I make all my mules with that handle shape as I intend to do some serious stabbing and I do not want my hand to move forward. I use a $14 Ottoza sheath from Amazon Ver...

Re: Using standard wood scale sizes for Mule

And the knife is complete. Spalted Tamarind, I had to split the original cut scales to be sure of having dark lines in the wood. Upon close inspection using the scales whole would not have worked as well. The dark lines wander all over so choosing patterns where the final shape would have character ...

Re: The Mule Thumb Ramp

I've toyed with the idea of adding some material behind the thumb ramp to make it less abrupt but haven't had any genius ideas yet. Would Spyderco consider adding some material behind the existing thumb ramp to make it less abrupt? Adding material in this area would not affect the blade itself, or ...

Re: Show your Mule

My son is retiring in May as a Battalion Chief, he served both the local police department, and then the local fire department. I made a boat knife for him, in honor of both, thin blue line and thin red line. Mule M398, wood is spalted tamarind, lines are g10, handle finish is burnished carnauba wax...

Re: Show your Mule

Some of you folks run the handle material so close to the blade, it reminds me of a ruffle collar. Not that there's anything wrong with a ruffle collar. I intend to use my knife and will certainly be stabbing with it. The handle does not allow for a guard so I make a sure fire handle non forward sl...

Re: MT33 CPM REX 76 -First Impressions, Performance, and Testing Thread

I travel full time so I am calling my Rex 76 Mule my Camp Knife. It is very sharp with a polished edge. Today I took a far in the back of the freezer package for dinner. It was a beef filet that had gotten a little freezer burn. While it was solid as a rock, I took out the Camp Knife and shaved all ...

Why do the factory scales not fit flush? The handle is a slight bit proud all around it?
Is this a feature or a flaw?
They are "recessed" my guess is since these mules might vary slightly a bit of setback provides an always fits scale. You could grind the mule tang to fit I suppose.

I stole that from some saltwater fishing show or other. The sharks we encounter near Cedar Key are gray in color. Otherwise there is a second term, "The man in the brown suit" for some other species.

I have had a lot of fun with Daiwa Acculites in the "noodle" rod sort of long light rods. Three foot sharks on a 9' 6" Daiwa Acculite is not just a lot of fun, it is a very efficient way to fight that sort of fish. Brings them in easier than shorter SW Inshore sorts of rods. The const...

I love Fenwick rods. St Croix I call Saint Cracks. I have had two both broke on medium sized fish. G Loomis is already spelled correctly Gloom is. Broke casting YIKES. For really nice freshwater glass rods, you cannot beat Eagle Claw. And the ads about not breaking Ugly Stix are pretty much true. My...

Re: Lightweight Native 5

I've never considered lubing a linerless FRN knife, since none of mine are sticky. Just lucky I guess, but I have a dozen or so. You may have gotten un lucky with that particular knife. Hope you get it straightened out. No other without bushing to compare it too. Just might be the nature of the beast
