Re: St Nicks UKPK?

I really really really wish SNK would do a 4V SE knife. The UKPK would be brilliant.

Re: EDC Hygiene: Fixed Blade VS. Folder

I’ve been musing a little more over this and the more I consider it the more I think a basic Mora with the loose fitting plastic sheath would probably be best suited to your needs. The plastic handle is moulded onto the blade and is a tight seal, the sheath covers not just the blade but most of the ...

Re: EDC Hygiene: Fixed Blade VS. Folder

Huh, many of these answers surprise me, but I guess not everybody has suffered major health problems like most of my family has. I am what I would say is not unreasonably careful about what I touch before eating. At public restaurants I don't use my hands directly to touch much. I have a premature ...

Re: Cruwear pitting, and repeated spot corrosion problem

I suspect cross contamination from the belt used to shape/sharpen the blade. I use cru-wear in the tropics and it is surprisingly (and pleasingly!) corrosion resistant - in my experience better than VG10 by miles which is a stainless steel. I don’t think there’s any simple way to rectify cross conta...

Re: EDC Hygiene: Fixed Blade VS. Folder

I usually carry two knives - an SE and a PE knife (be they folders or fixed blades). There are two separate instances where I use knives (folders or fixed) outside of the home for food prep - 1) If I’m at work and doing food prep for students to cook or consume raw I use the PE one as a dedicated fo...

Re: VG10 HRC

I don't watch much YouTube reviews. The one's that I watched were not very knowledgeable about knives, at least by my standards. ... I really don't mean to bash on anyone, but I think many Youtube "reviewers" should just call themselves what they actually are: "First impression of kn...

Re: Experienced Serrated Edge K390 users wanted.

All very interesting guys. So it sounds like tips wearing or breaking down doesn't really matter in the long run since that is the desired edge in the end, more wavy than pointy. I am still curious what steels hold up better than others in SE. I am very familiar with how K390 holds in PE after some...

Re: Experienced Serrated Edge K390 users wanted.

😂 turns out we were almost home! So I basically sharpen the ridged side like a PE blade on CBN until the points round out a bit (which thins it out a lot too), then I sharpen it like Hans mentioned in my vice with the conical rod until I’m a happy chap. Once that’s done it takes but a fleeting momen...

Re: Experienced Serrated Edge K390 users wanted.

Oh, and as for k390 SE, I haven’t had any issues with the tips of the serrations. I do knock them down a bit with a diamond plate before I sharpen them though, so they’re more of a wavy set of peaks than spikes. I do that to all of my SE blades before I use them for the first time after I noticed m...

Re: Experienced Serrated Edge K390 users wanted.

I don’t know if it is at all helpful but I do pretty much exactly what Hans does using a conical diamond file. Where I differ slightly is that I clamp the knife blade teeth pointing out into a ball and socket bench vise (one that rotates in all directions that I use for holding chainsaws by their gu...

Re: Boating and lanyards

The buoyant force on an object equals the weight of the fluid it displaces. In equation form, Archimedes’ principle is F B = w fl , where F B is the buoyant force and w fl is the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. https://pressbooks.online.ucf.edu/phy2048tjb/chapter/14-4-archimedes-princi...

Re: Boating and lanyards

I use retractable lanyards on some of my gear while fishing. For example forceps on a retractable lanyard attached to my waders or a T2 Toothpick with a retractable lanyard on my ice fishing bibs. A knife on a retractable lanyard might come in handy if you have a good place to clip it on to. I migh...

Re: Crucarta, what's going on?

If you’re after a really jet black patina the sap from the fig family of trees (Ficus) does a fantastic job. These photos are taken after extensive cleaning and a liberal application of Marine Tuff Glide (my poison of choice for tool steels).
