The coating process interferes with the blade temper. It might be possible to do on K390 but requires more R&D.electro-static wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 12:19 pmIs there a reason why we don’t see coated K390 Seki spydercos?

Re: Maxamet sharpening is no joke.
I've found maxamet fairly quick to sharpen on DMT stones. I rarely sharpen my maxamet knives but last time I did it, it took about as long as any other decent steel. I would also not recommend a DMT extra coarse stone on maxamet unless you're trying to do some major reprofiling. I've found the extra...

Re: Yellow Magnacut :(
I thought so also. So, I did a bit of research. Here is what I found. Larrin, on KnifeSteelNerds.com, mentioned using a temperature of 400 °F in the chart in the K390 article. The Wikipedia article on "Tempering (metallurgy)" mentioned a range of temperatures for different steel usages wi...

Re: New Dragonfly
I'd like a reverse tanto or a sheepsfoot blade. Reverse tanto is basically just a more aesthetic version of wharncliffe that would be slimmer in the pocket. I also find the sheepsfoot blade on the Caribbean really convenient for a lot of things but it's massive, so a smaller sheepsfoot would have a ...

Re: I'm in love with Ultem...
Well obvious first question, what can it do that FRCP can't do? Besides being available from custom makers. It can be easily machined or injection molded. FRCP is injection mold only. It wouldn't break the internet but some bi-directional textured ultem scales would certainly make some waves! I won...

Re: Bodacious Discussion
It's cool to see Spyderco trying out more choil-less designs, but it's a bit disappointing to not see more knives getting the contoured handle like the shaman. I don't mind a slab handle on cheaper models, but if I'm spending as much as a shaman, I'm going to be comparing the handle to it. IMHO I d...

Re: Are We Witnessing The Death Knell of K390 In Production Folders?
I may have missed it in the 9 pages of discussion this generated... But does anyone else feel like their main aversion to the K390 series is that they're only available in FRN and back locks? I mean, the FRN I don't mind so much, but I haven't been interested in a back lock for years. I'm not even ...

Re: Are We Witnessing The Death Knell of K390 In Production Folders?
Wharncliffe - To me personally it is pretty much like the Tanto, ran it’s course of popularity (never was into the Tanto) Have a few Wharncliffe knives and liked/bought them when more and more knives came out with them, probably wouldn’t even contemplate another knife in a wharncliffe blade. wharnc...

Re: Are We Witnessing The Death Knell of K390 In Production Folders?
I think a part of the issue with the with spyderco's wharncliffe knives is that they're ugly looking. I really like the utility of the wharncliffe blade, personally, but the really wide curved blade that sticks out of the handle when closed just doesn't look right to me. I think a reverse tanto styl...

Re: Native vs Lil' Native
I find the lil' native kinda big and blocky for its size. Feels like I might as well have a full size native 5 in my pocket. I tend to either use a dragonfly or a chaparral these days if I want something small that fits in a watch pocket.

Re: What’s on your current short list?
I'd like a nice G10 native 5. Maybe the fluted cf S90V one or the S110V one (if it comes back into stock in canada). I'm not sure if I'm ready to drop the money on the fluted cf yet, so I might wait for something else. The enuff 2 K390 is also nice, but I don't have that much use for a fixed blade b...

Re: What % of you collection has the factory edge angle?
I think I left my chapparals at the factory profile. With pretty much everything else, I've ended up feeling like the angle isn't acute enough. Even with maxamet, I didn't have chipping issues once I got the angle down to something that cut well.

Re: Kitchen knives and salt steels just curious
I've never seen corrosion on a stainless steel kitchen knife that wasn't put in the dishwasher, so salt steels are overkill for most kitchens. Magnacut would be nice, but that would probably increase the price to $200. These knives are budget options, so the choice of BD1N (a budget steel) is not at...

Re: FOMO or No?
It's hard to differentiate FOMO from collecting. Something isn't interesting to have if it's going to be available potentially forever. A limited run like the cru-wear ayoob on the other hand is particularly cool because it might be the last run ever of the ayoob. I did buy a S110V military because ...

Re: Large fixed blades in 20CV
Geometry matters more than alloy when it comes to strength. It's also possible they're doing something different with heat treatment to improve toughness too. Larrin's tests also show 1095 performing pretty poorly, even at 57RC, but you can find tons of videos of people trying to break beefy knives ...

Re: Potential for other models to come in 15V
Since Maxamet outperforms 15V and we already have a Native, PM2, P3 and a Sage in Maxamet, then 15V makes sense in larger, 4" blades like the Native Chief and the Military, because Maxamet blades won't happen in these larger models anyway. 15V seems to do better than maxamet in my experience. ...

Re: A Month Without Spyderco: Thoughts & Observations
Ironically, despite the literal hundreds of products in their catalogues, there seems to be a paucity of diversity and genuine innovation in their designs (I’m sorry, releasing the same drop-point liner-lock flipper in six different handle colours and a choice of G10 or Micarta scales doesn’t count...

I like the knife as a tool, but K390 for a self defense knife? Are you doing enough self defence that the edge wears out on VG10?
