Re: Show your mods!

15V Mule that I converted into a lightweight compression lock flipper. It has a liner less G10 handle construction, titanium lock bar with ceramic detent ball, phosphor bronze washers, steel pivot bushing, Cocobolo backspacer with press fit threaded connectors, and a titanium deep carry clip. The kn...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

This one is all done, and I have to say I’m really pleased with how it turned out. Contouring the scales really made it feel good in my hand and gave so much better access to the Spydiehole for flicking. The Ti clip weighs almost nothing and the final weight is just under 80 grams, which is right ab...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

Got the action tuned just the way I want it with no blade play 😎 Now I just need to make a clip and figure out how I want to contour and finish off the scales. I’m tempted to do a pattern similar to the Lotus style PM2 scales, but don’t want to remove too much material for fear of introducing flex t...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

For these cuts I didn’t rely on a jig but just did the old fashioned method of creeping up on the fit. Similar to most of my hand done wood joinery I will cut away the bulk of the material first (in this case with the cutting disc) and then change over to something that removes material slower (carb...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

Excellent! May I ask how you made the complex and intricate shapes in the very hard steel of the tang? What tools can do this? The cuts in the tang are all done freehand with a Dremel, roughed in with a reinforced cutting disc and then ground with cheap carbide bits. For the disc cuts I clamp the b...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

I ended up making my backspacer out of Cocobolo just because I had some that was close to the correct thickness. The backspacer on this knife is pretty unique in that it isn’t just a spacer, but it also helps to anchor the lock bar. The two pieces are press fit together with two 1/8” 2-56 threaded c...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

Here’s a quick progress update. Things are moving along nicely with this one. Cutting the lockbar was pretty painless, and in this first pic you can see it in place. Also you can see where I drilled into the the tang to mark the center of my stop pin locations at open and closed positions. This was ...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

Very nice 👍 I'd look at some cheap Chinese CNCs - that's what I have but never use for these purposes. It's about 600$ with upgraded motors and software, but totally worth it if you do this stuff a lot which I don't. I started the same way. Not a bad idea, but I actually enjoy doing this kind of ha...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

I decided hold off on making my HIC Axis lock Mule, mostly because it seems like a difficult material to learn a new lock with. My thought is to probably make an Axis lock Mule with one of my other Mules first, then fit the HIC blade so it can be swapped in. Also, this whole thing is only about maki...

Re: Show your Mule

Fresh set of Lignum Vitae scales that I made. This is widely thought of as the most dense wood in existence and has a natural waxy/oily feel to it that is very unique. It is actually pretty easy to work with but the dust tends to clog sandpaper a little more than normal https://i.imgur.com/b7hP3t6.j...

Re: MT36P – K294 MICROCLEAN Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Could someone explain to me what a cutting competition is exactly? How they work and whatnot? I'm assuming this is something at like blade show :thinking ? Basically I guess my question is.. is it a real thing or is it like Forged in fire type? And no I'm not asking if it's a CATRA test accurate le...

Re: A new spin on "HIC dropping soon"

What will happen with my busted blade? Well if I had powered diamond tooling, I would reshape the tip. It would take forever by hand. I am still scheming on this. Once I had the tip reshaped, I would be interested in experimenting with sharpening the edge. I expect the truth to be that this won't t...

Re: Show your Mule

For those that have made wooden handles, what size pins did you use? 4mm? 6mm? I could argue that the pins are almost useless. Their diameter isn't exactly for strength it's for looks. Let's just walk through together how we make full tang knives in my shop or anywhere really. It's not a very effic...

Re: Show your Mule

Cocobolo scales that are fresh off the buffing wheel. No finish or buffing compound, just sanded to 1000 grit then buffed with a raw cotton fabric wheel. You can see why this wood is so desirable. https://i.imgur.com/miVkvCC.mp4 Casper, what kind of fasteners are those? They appear to be flat or do...

Fresh set of Gabon Ebony scales I made on my HIC Mule. Last night I ordered some black screws so I can go full stealth 😎 https://i.imgur.com/nYorIiF.jpeg I like that. A lot. Get a few with the black screws if you don't mind so I know if I should switch over. I've wanted to use CF but I don't have a...

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??

Carrying my “Bombshelled” M4 Shaman https://i.imgur.com/sXJS8Ue.jpeg Pretty cool, gives the Shaman a completely different look! How much shorter did the blade and the handle get? Is it a true "four finger only when using the choil"-knife now? The blade is now 3” from tip to the scales, an...

Re: Show your Mule

I have a good amount of experience making knife scales using a trim router/mini table setup, and have a few pieces of advice for you. You are correct that making small parts is inherently dangerous, so you really need to be careful and use extreme caution when doing this. I have been a cabinetmaker...
