Re: Community Sharpening Journal, Part 2

Looks good from here. I imagine it should be plenty durable with that adjustment. Curious what the edge retention will be like for that steel.

It's still micro chipping a tiny bit, but not nearly as bad as at 15 dps. That could just be the mode of failure for this steel. I have heard that's the ...

Re: Crazy Good Deals Part 2!!

It’s not like we are forced to buy them. There are alternative things to spend our money on - we’re still sort of a free people. I choose to buy them - or not - and so the price is the price.

Yeah, but the point of being vocal about it isn't to bemoan the prices as if we're forced to pay them ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal, Part 2

I'm not familiar with M398 or what realm it resides in. Is there another steel that is considered similar too?

I would say it's most comparable to S110V and S125V It has nearly a carbide volume of about 30%. While S125V is split about 50/50 with chromium carbides and vanadium carbides, M398 ...

Re: Draconian Knife Ban Bill Rises from the Dead in Washington

Once again, Knife Rights is being hyperbolic and disingenuous about not just the intent but the language of this law and the effects it will have.

Actual bill:

Re: Got A Problem With An Online Retailer

I don't recall if it was UPS or FedEx, but I ordered a Mule through the Spyderco website and selected it to ship work signature confirmation, and Spyderco paid the shipping since it was over $150. Well, the courier completely ignored the request for signature confirmation and just left the package ...

Got a Roadie XL and this M398 is weirdly hard to sharpen. Such a little blade, and more chromium carbide than vanadium carbide, but it still took almost 3 hours to reprofile even on an Atoma 140. I think it was due to the grind from the factory being so obtuse.

This ...

Re: VG-10 criticism: why?

I don't know why people feel the need to defend steels from criticism. It would be like someone going to s race track and insisting your 70s era muscle car is still just as good as the 21st century sports car or super car. Meanwhile neither one is very practical for getting groceries.

Trick question.

Get both :p

Best answer ever. Now if only I had the funds for both.

Question for you. Does your heat treat change Larrin’s test results and if so then how?

It wasn't sent to Dr Larrin.

The heat treatment is proprietary and the data is not publicly available.

The BBB ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal, Part 2

I have had an edge that scrape shaved arm hair on both sides that I then stropped and afterward found it harder to shave hair with though.

Well, if you take an edge that's only scrape shaving, then either it has a burr, or the apex radius is just too wide to shave well. Todd Simpson showed the ...

Re: HRC Database

Okay that clears it up. Have you ever considered plotting the BESS score over a number of cuts?

We did in fact for a lot of the tests. When plotted across all the runs and all the different steels at different angles and handness levels it was relatively linear. If the edge became ...

We did this between 2014 and 2019. I can't remember the exact starting lbs that we had as an acceptable "range" 100%, but it was along the lines of "starting between 8-10lbs of force is acceptable, once 10-12 lbs of force had been gained the amount of cuts were recorded."

Based on the number ...

Re: How do YOU define "beater knife"?

Usually a beater knife for me is one that I expect to run up against something hard when I'm cutting with it. Sure, there's always a "proper" tool that can be used as an alternative, but a lot of the time a knife is more all-purpose and the dedicated tools are single purpose and so it can generally ...

Anyone else notice that their wharnie tip is a bit wonky? I'm carrying this bad boy today for Wharnie Wednesday and noticed the tip has a weird spine grind right at the tip, complete with darker patina and a noticeable nick on it that catches my nail. Anyone else's blade look like this?

Wait, is M390 a tool steel?

Lol I'm a maniac... I carry those two Spydercos, the SAK, a M390 button-lock folder and a S90V button-lock folder all at the same time.

Re: Lucky that I´m a Seki-guy...

Yeah... I don't overthink it too much.

Backlocks have a close bias, so I like that about them. I wouldn't carry my previous detent based close knife while working on a house foundation because crawling on the ground has opened it in my pocket. A CBBL might be a more modern option, but the Manix ...
