Re: Flattening Whestones

I've flattened a few whetstones and dressed some resin bonded diamond stones with SiC and a glass plate. I just put the SiC directly on the plate with some water, no protective layer. Haven't noticed any dishing after doing 4-5 stones so far. Easy enough to get another glass plate if it gets dished ...

Re: Tax day MAP sale!

Indiana Knives has the Sage 5 LW Maxamet for $180 Great price for a killer knife. I picked up a couple back-ups from this sale for similar pricing. Yeah I have the Sage 1 Maxamet so figured I should grab one of these too. Unfortunately for me, I bought one at $200 from REC early this morning :rofl

Re: Building a Custom Knife for Sal: CPM S60V

Thanks for sharing this BBB. S60V sounded like a great steel on paper and I wondered why it wasn't really in use today not having any personal experience with it. That's interesting it has a finer microstructure than S90V and M390. Makes me want to try sharpening some. Can't wait to see the final pr...

Would be great if true. Been wanting to grab some of the recently released stuff but the price increases have given me more pause than in recent years.

Re: Lil Temperance 3 Pocket Clip

So been down this rabbit hole before. Own the original G10 LT3, the new FRN LT3, and a Native 5. The hole spacing on the Native 5 is different even though the layout is the same. Native 5 is about .400" center to center for the bottom two holes and the Lil temp 3 is 0.500". If you check ou...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

You're totally right about diamond plates leaving deeper scratches, I should've mentioned that. Diamond plates are definitely my go to if i want a toothy edge, however I love the CGSW resin bonded stones! Made in USA too. They almost feel like using water stones since the resin is a bit firmer comp...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

As a caveat to my statement above, the edge I got was able to shave small hairs off my arm. Probably sharp enough for any of my daily needs, I’m just curious about the science of sharpening and how to progress I do think magnificaiton would confirm if you're fully apexing or not if as you say, you ...

https://i.postimg.cc/7YdwjNpf/IMG-8380.jpg Sharpening my S45VN PM2. It’s sharp but I can’t get that next level sharp. After I got the burr I tried to remove and then alternate sides with light pressure What's your process like? What's your progression like? Which abrasives? Have you tried using mag...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Finally got mine last night. With all the talk about sharpness in this thread I checked mine and indeed it wasn't that sharp. Could kind of slice but more tear regular printer paper. Checking the edge with my pocket microscope, to my surprise it had a burr. That explains the lack of sharpness, but d...

Re: Spyderco Black Friday Map Holiday Sales 2023!

Another cancelled and refunded order from SMKW here. Would've been nice if they cancelled the order a few days or weeks after it was initially placed, but not cancelling until 3 months later had me assuming I'd actually get the items at the price I paid. I guess the good news is that the refund will...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

Nice work getting a ceramic knife sharp. Edge does look to have some roughness or microchips, but I'm assuming it's very difficult to avoid that on a ceramic blade, at least with the equipment and knowledge we have now for home sharpening. Yeah I was using very light pressure too and the edge still...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

Bought a cheap ceramic knife to practice sharpening on in anticipation of the HIC Mule. First time trying to sharpen a ceramic knife. Out of the box it wouldn't slice a paper towel and barely sliced into a regular piece of paper. Sharpening it was an interesting experience. Initially started on my V...

Re: Price increases for 2024

SpydieChef was $191.97 when it first came out in October 2016. At the time, MAP was 40% off MSRP of $319.95. Since then the MSRP has increased to $404.00 and with MAP being 25% off MSRP means the dealer price will be $303.00 tomorrow. It's worse when you go back pre MAP as well. I paid $98.99 from ...

Re: A Deeper Investigation into Spyderco Diamond vs cBN: Which is better?! Why!?

Interesting topic as usual Shawn. Only CBN abrasive I own is the Spyderco benchstone, but admittedly haven't used it much. Seems to cut similarly to Spyderco's diamond Sharpmaker rods from what I remember though. Wish I had a fullsize Diamond benchstone from Spyderco too to compare. Maybe I'll try a...
