Re: CNC Machine to shape scales

Shape all my hardwood scales by hand. A good belt sander would be far more handy in my opinion. Most of my figured Hardwood scales are book matched so probably not something you would CNC Many CNC scale makers are doing G10, Micarta and other materials. As a knife maker who watches and follows a lo...

CNC Machine to shape scales

Does anyone here use an affordable CNC machine to shape hardwood scales? I'm thinking of getting a small CNC machine (SainSmart Genmitsu 3020 Pro) and one of the purpose is to shape mule scales for my use.

Re: Mule Team as garden knife (Hori Hori)

You might not need an expensive knife for the task. A butter knife would do since you need to pull the root out by plunging the butter knife near the root and push down, levering the root slightly so you can pull it out easily. If you cut the stem without pulling the root, it will eventually grow ou...

That's an interesting look, and (except for the screw hardware), is very intriguing. I like it.
Once I find a better hardware and happy with the overall design, I’ll post the file on thingiverse for people to download.

Re: Show your Mule

I saw a similar design being sold and thought it was interesting so I created one with my own take on the design. This is the 1st and second test prints and I think it's getting close to where I want it to feel and look. It's a slim design at 13mm at the thickest currently but thinking of adding a m...

Re: Pocket EDC Mule hack

So, I think both of these are on thingverse. It’s a great way for me to pocket carry my mule and the interesting thing is that when I hook the sheath on my pocket when I pull the knife out, the sheath just drops right in my pocket. It’s the smallest profile sheath system for the mule I think. Firem...

Re: Show your Mule

Updated my mule sheath design to include a clip so I can EDC my mule. New revision eliminated any rattle when mule is sheathed.

Forgot to upload the model, sorry about that. I've tested parts but haven't printed it in one piece as I only have a crappy resin printer.

Thanks for sharing your creation. I know it takes some work, tinkering, test printing and such to get to this point.

Re: 3D printing sheaths?

Since I don't have access to a 3D printer (and no libraries around here have them), I'll likely have to use Shapeways. What plastic should I use? I have only printed my sheaths with PLA. I think ABS would work even better. Soft/flexible filaments such as TPU will probably not work as the clamps may...

I like a scale that doesn't "crowd" the blade.

Good work.
Thanks

Re: Another version of a 3D Printed Scales

By the way, in the Thingiverse description, could you specify the recommended printing parameters (like you did for the sheath), as well as the nut and screw size ? That'd be useful for me and I guess for other people as well. (In my case I'll have it printed by a commercial service, so I'll instru...

Re: Another version of a 3D Printed Scales

Perhaps a printed sheath design could work together with the scale design so that the sheath and the scales clipped together like a puzzle piece of sorts for retention. imagine a tab on the scale that you were depress to release the knife and that tab extend it into the scale I but not exposed to t...

True, but that will be the next project, making a sheath.
Can't wait to see your Walnut scales design as well as the sheath. I will try to update the 3D sheath design to fit this particular shape.

Re: Another version of a 3D Printed Scales

I'm working on making some scales with some walnut I have laying around and my idea was to follow the front edge of the handle much like you did there. That curve and the Halpern scales and others just looks a little off to my eye with that straight edge right in front of it for the grind. I'm goin...

Re: Another version of a 3D Printed Scales

There's not much really you can do to change the profile since the handle dictates that for us. Only difference is indicated and the profile of the grip. Almost all the scales i've seen have the same front. Slight difference to give it another personality. :nerd

Just avoid the stuff that uses acetic acid to cure. I would feel more comfortable using a gasket maker deigned for automotive applications.
Good idea, I’ll try to find some locally if not, I’ll order one online.
