Re: Which spyderco is in the mail?

Waiting for a Wharncliffe Dragonfly in better stainless, and waiting for Dragonflies in better stainless overall, I finally caved and ordered the pink S30V Dragonfly. I plan to dye it to a less conspicuous color...

Re: Upping the price.

I think that you can see that Eric is working with the Chinese makers to learn to work with other steels. But using US steels does raise the price. The downside is sometimes sales? We have to see how it does in the Real World Market. That takes time. eg; the Polestar and Alcyone are very functional...

Re: The Vosteed Labrador

The Mini Labrador showed up yesterday. I took it apart for inspection and the internals were pretty clean from the factory, no extraneous tool marks, etc.. They used a steel lock-bar insert with over-travel stop and steel washers in the bearing pockets. It runs 1mm ceramic bearings in a folded brass...

Re: What "Other" is in your pocket???

Last two days... I've also got a Dragonfly in my jacket pocket and a Swiss Tool on my belt. The Civivi is an inlay swap. I'll often see a Civivi or Sencut model I like but the scales or inlays I want come with coated blades or hardware. So now I have the versions I want plus a drawer full of customi...

Re: Upping the price.

Very interesting discussion, and yes, I've been following it, and will participate. We don't like the high prices either and we're always considering the paths to take. I guess I should begin with China. I usually avoid politics in this forum, and I appreciate that we've been good about that, but a...

Re: Upping the price.

Let's stipulate that each of us can make our own judgements of value based on our needs and preferences, so for me... I have more than 20 Civivi, about the same number of CJRB, over a dozen Kizer, and 20 other budget knives from the upstarts like Miguron and Vosteed. A lot of fun little knives in t...

Re: Upping the price.

I love Spyderco but this issue is especially evident with their models in 8Cr13Mov and VG-10. Especially on the former, they really seem stuck in the past and now the same Chinese manufacturers working down the street or on the next assembly line over are offering much better materials at much bette...

Kershaw's also coming out with a double edge variant of the Livewire to follow up on their Tanto and Spear Point. This blade shape is also offered in Magnacut.

If they do a non-coated tanto Livewire, I'll be all about it.

Re: The Vosteed Labrador

I have a few Vosteed knives now and I'm generally impressed. Their Nightshade is cool too, in any of the several variations. The forward cant and blade shape really make it a fun cutter. I know Kizer did some of their OEM but they've used more than one manufacturer. I'm not sure who makes what but i...

Yes, I still have my fake tree up. The kids are all about it. Something about living in the frozen north.

Re: Fixed blade EDC

Oops, forgot you posted that. Been a long week at work, just a bit tired 😆 I saw the White River backpacker is now in Magnacut so I’m intrigued again bit the other strong contender is the Fastpak. Just hope the handle would fit my hand for the Fastpak. How thin is the stock? The Fastpak isn't Magna...

Re: Fixed blade EDC

The guardian is very comfortable, I tried a model from Amazon. Is it possible to put it on the belt comfortably? Yes. I strongly recommend picking up the Armatus sheath for it. Anyone used the Rainer Knives Fastpak? Did you see mine and the little blurb I wrote about it above? It's a fantastic litt...

Re: Flashlights

Convoy has largely (though not completely) ruined me for other brands. They are inexpensive but work well. They are available in many configurations with lots of different emitters and color temperatures. The guy who runs it is active on Budget Light Forums and is pretty good about satisfying niche ...

Re: Fixed blade EDC

Part of me still has an itch to carry a fixed blade but I haven’t found the right one yet. I thought I liked the White River backpacker model but the front part was too skinny for my pointer finger, made out feel wobbly if cutting hard... I wanted to like the Backpacker but similar issue. It just d...

This is a wonderful knife. Fit, finish, action, and lock-up are all excellent. The 2.5mm blade thickness helps it to be a nice slicer too.

Re: Corrosion and Edge Retention

Think about what an edge is. A fine edge is a shape defined by precision. Rust involves some loss of the material that was shaped there, and the rust itself takes on its own shape or structure in its place, effectively blurring the shape you created when you sharpened it. While the effect is more dr...

Re: Black Linen Micarta instead CF/G-10 please

Micarta is my favorite scale material. Sure, Micarta is actually a broad category of fabric set in resin and we often use the term more broadly in the way "Band-Aid" has come to refer to adhesive bandages in general. Each kind can also be finished in different ways, from beautiful polishin...

Re: Anyone want to see Vanax in the salt series?

Sure! Even if it is just a sprint run or something, it would be cool to see. I have knives in LC200N and MagnaCut but not Vanax and it would be fun to fill the gap with a Spydie.

A Wharncliffe Dragonfly in Vanax (or MagnaCut) would be the bee's knees!
