Re: Excited Spyderco Noob...Used Knife???

Yeah, that's stained... You could try some flitz or just oiling it and giving it a good rub down, that would likely take care of it. But I think you're ok to ask the seller for a return if you want

Re: Ti Framelock with drop point blade?

Even a quick illustration is far better than a thousand words. I am on board with this design. Really enjoying my Ti models lately and interested in adding more with sleek, elegant designs. I tried my hand at a sketch but it just looked like a nirvana and an Oz Roosevelt had a baby, too close to ea...

Re: Maxamet vs ZDP-189

Only thing not mentioned so far I can add is hardness and sharpening difficulty. Spydercos zdp-189 usually clocks in at 63-65 HRC while their Maxamet is typically run at 66-68 HRC. Zdp having all chromium carbides will be more easily cut than maxamet with it's vanadium and tungsten.

Re: Shaman safety

I had the nub ground off on my first shaman. When I first handled it I felt like you do and thought it would improve my experience. When I bought my second shaman a long while later, I thought I might want to grind that nub off too but decided to carry it for a while first to double check. To my sur...

Re: Thinnest functional bladestock for a general use folder

For this application I understand you want steels with very fine grain structure. Small carbides. K390 would not be a great choice I don't think. Magnacut has fine grain already and shouldn't need modification to do well here. Cruwear, aebL as already mentioned. To add to this list: sandvik steels, ...

Re: Spyderco knives

My daily carry at work or otherwise is usually around 3.5" blade length. However I will always keep a Lil native at 2.5" blade length around. I find it to be very good at some tasks. First, it fits in the 5th pocket of jeans very nicely as a backup. Second, when I'm wearing basketball shor...

Re: CPM MagnaCut | Edge Performance

I've read that on some steel compositions higher HRC also results in lower corrosion resistance. Is this true of magnacut? If so, Spyderco aiming to make this a salt steel could result in them choosing a different heat treat than optimal for edge retention or apex stability.

Re: The Next Shaman Sprint

I’m excitedly curious about a choil-less version I use mine day in and day out. I think if I threw one choil-less variant in I would nip myself all the time. Pretty happy with the design the way it is. If I could make a change it would be a thinner blade stock and BTE variant for magnacut. That ste...

Re: The Next Shaman Sprint

Three variants... I recall talk of a straight spine, a LW/FRN, and this choil-less. Those would be my guess. Maybe the FRN/LW will come with some magnacut?

Re: The Next Shaman Sprint

The shaman is my jam. I have zero complaints with it and consider it my folding mule. Of course I'm in. Currently have s30v PE, m4, rex45, s90v, Zwear. Really looking forward to magnacut and k390. I'd prefer the 67 HRC of the seki heat treat over the 64 of the bento box golden exclusives... Other st...

Re: Playing favorites

Love the ergos of the Shaman. I haven't tried every model, but the contoured scales are a huge plus to me, the blade length is just right, the leaf shape is my top choice, comp lock works well for my uses, and I can deal with the weight of liner backed G10 construction just fine to get that extra st...

Re: webfoot v golden stone

I recently picked up a double stuff 2 - one side is (presumably) the same CBN as the webfoot, and the other side is the same ceramic as the goldenstone. I haven't had a whole lot of experience with it yet but at first try it seems like it's a fairly large grit jump and I might have preferred the fin...

Re: webfoot v golden stone

The webfoot is going to be coated CBN abrasive, estimated 320 grit JIS. The goldenstone is spydercos fine ceramic abrasive, estimated 2500 grit JIS. In my experience, the webfoot would be best for reprofiling or repairs, the goldenstone for touching up via microbeveling.

Re: Upcoming MT32P (SRS13/SUS405) discussion thread

This steel was new to me. After a quick search I found an explination Larrin made in the comments on his article "Testing the Edge Retention of 48 Knife Steels": SRS-15/SRS-13 are basically PM D2 steels with increasing alloy additions for more “hot hardness” and wear resistance. I wouldn’t...

Re: CPM MagnaCut | Edge Performance

That's a good read and an impressive level of detail there. I can appriciate that it's very tedious work. Thanks for your effort! It would be awesome to be able to generate a sort of data sheet like this for each mule and to be able to compare, but that's way too much work for any one person.

Re: Sharpening shortens lifespan

Hi, So for reprofiling do I necessarily need diamond stones? Also, I have a Spyderco Chaparral. I am a newbie, but as far as I have understood it's a zero bevel knife. In this case reprofiling is not necessary? And I also plan to buy a Techno 2. In that case, reprofiling is necessary? The chap is n...

Re: Sharpening Rex45?

Yup, the skate thing is a known phenomenon with high HRC steels. They tend to deburr very easily too. Just want to throw out there that I've been able to very easily and effectively get great edges from my Rex 45 from a simple King Deluxe 1k. Soft water stones can cut high hardness and high wear res...
