Re: Manix 2 Lightweight CPM SPY27

I picked up this knife on Black Friday, and have really come to enjoy it. I hope that SPY27 will make its way to to other models. I'd be interested in a Dragonfly, for instance.

Re: Something between the Manix and the Chaparral?

Thanks everyone, for the advice! I picked up a Sage 5 lightweight, and love it. It's the perfect in-between size I was looking for. The feel in-hand is closer to the Chaparral than the Manix, and has the extra grip space to feel more comfortable. Overall, I think the Manix is the most comfortable fo...

Re: A Sal/Spyderco book?

I'd be interested in this. I'd love to hear whatever life stories Sal chooses to share. Having tried a few brands, I've largely settled on Spyderco because the knives just feel right to me (not all models, to be sure, but I have my favorites). I'd love to hear more about the design inspiration, proc...

Re: Aside from sharpening knives, what did you use your Sharpmaker for?

I've used the brown rods to knock down some rough edges on non-knife metal items. The Sharpmaker also works very well for scissors.

Re: 2023 Spyderco Plans Or Projects

I don't have plans to buy many more knives, but I would like to get better at freehand sharpening. If anyone has a recommendation for an affordable bench stone(s), I'd welcome it. The most "super" steel I have is probably M4.

Re: Your top Spyderco picks for 2022

Due to the MAP holiday, I picked up a lightweight Manix (and have some other trims) so I'd say the Manix was my most-carried knife. It's perhaps the most suited overall to my use. Rounding things out are the Kapara and Watu.

Re: Manix jimping poll

I have wondered why there's no jimping at the back of the handle spine. Given that it's typical to press that part of the handle into the palm to manipulate the lock, it would seem like a natural addition.

Re: Your dedicated work/bench/money knife

I keep a VG-10 Delica as my workbench knife. It gets a lot of use, including for rope, twine, trimming plastic or wood, and cutting material on a hard surface (the famous "utility cut"). It's still in great shape, and gets maintained on a Sharpmaker.

Re: Are there any models you liked the previous better than the current?

I'm not sure this counts, but I prefer the 2018-ish Manix back-lock. I'm lucky enough to have it, along with a G10 CBBL version, and a lightweight CBBL version. For me, the back-lock is the most comfortable due to the G10 texture, minimal jimping, the closed back construction, and a bit more width t...

It seems like the Sage has the nod. Any thoughts on the lightweight vs the CF version?

Re: Something between the Manix and the Chaparral?

Thanks everyone for the advice, and especially to Guts for the comparison pictures. Those are so much more helpful than looking at raw specs. Hopsbreath mentioned the Native. I've thought about that, but one thing I've often heard is that the Native is meant to be used with the choil, and I do like ...

Something between the Manix and the Chaparral?

I think I've settled on the Manix as my favorite in terms of the handle, but there are times I'd like a bit smaller carry. The Chaparral seems similar in overall shape, and I do like it, but find it a little small (still hoping for that Chaparral XL!). One of the grips I use is behind the choil, wit...

Re: Rebuilding your collection from scratch

Manix 2 (probably G10, possibly lightweight)
Chaparral or Sage
Victorinox Compact

Of course, I'd probably get more from there. The Kapara would likely be on the list, as well as the Watu.

Re: Spyderco clip locations are actually very well thought out

It's interesting how seemingly small tweaks can contribute to better feel and control of the knife. I'd not noticed before about the hump on the standard clip and where it naturally falls, but appreciate it now. Actually, I prefer not to have a deep carry clip, because I like to have a bit of handle...

Re: Black Friday Deals

I ended up buying the Manix lightweight in SPY27, riveted construction. Fit and finish is spot-on, with a wonderful factory edge. I'm looking forward to using this knife and getting a feel for SPY27.

My only (minor) disappointment is that the handle isn't translucent.

Re: Have you found "the one?"

I agree that "the one" is situational. My favorite overall is the back lock Manix from a few years back, and it's probably my most-carried. I also like the Kapara if I think I'll be doing some food prep, and will choose a wharncliffe (Yojimbo, Delica) if I anticipate a lot of utility work....

Re: What is the first Spyderco you'd replace?

That's an interesting question. Overall, my favorite is the Manix 2 mid-backlock. The G10 texture is perfect for my use, and I like the closed handle back for comfort. Since it's out of production, barring a used one, I'd look for one of the exclusive Manix 2s (exclusive because they tend to have mi...

I'm tempted by the SPY27 Manix lightweight. Anyone know if those are still pinned construction?
