Re: Sharpening 8Cr13MoV Byrd's Beak

Many thanks for your input!

Done. 16 dps. I will try first without the microbevel just to be fair when comparing with other steels. Then, listening to you, the microbevel will come, I'm afraid.

Spyderco doesn't use any steels that won't support a 15 degree per side edge, 8Cr included.

Thanks Vivi. Good to know.

Re: Sharpening 8Cr13MoV Byrd's Beak

Might be a good idea to sharpen it the same as your other steels so you get a fair comparison. 15-16 dps is the standard for my other steels and I was planning to follow the rule precisely to compare but I was hesitant because I read that 8Cr13Mov is fairly soft and didn't want to see a massive chi...

Re: Sharpening 8Cr13MoV Byrd's Beak

15 should be fine but a 20 degree micro bevel is probably a good idea, depends on your use. Thanks, David! My idea is to use and "abuse" the Meadowlark to the limit, although only in knife tasks (for example, I would never use it as a pry bar). In other words, to use it without compassion (somethin...

Sharpening 8Cr13MoV Byrd's Beak

I just bought a G-10 Meadowlark to test the PE capabilities of the mainland Chinese cousins of my Spydies (I already have a SE Cara Cara). While it cuts decently out of the box, it has nothing to do with the Syderco PE cutting edge I am used to. So I'm going to sharpen it conveniently (and seize t...

The Chaparral Birdseye Maple arrives in Europe!!!

European bros! I got 5 minutes ago an alert email from Lamnia. The woody Chaparral is now available in Europe. Price: 188.33 euros (227.46 USD at today's rate of exchange). So who's interested hurry up before they run out!! (I hope that at this price all of them will be perfectly blade centered) :D

Re: Tip-down (heresy? maybe not...)

Mi first (and for a long time only) Spyderco was a Millie. So I got used to the tip-down carry and for me it was natural. My second was a Civilian. Same. The third was a Dyad (with any clip position, one blade up and the other down). When I received my first Spydie which allowed the four clip positi...

Re: Lil' Kapara!

I think Sal just can´t say "no" to a CBBL spoon from a monetary point of view! This just MUST be a huge success! After the first S30V / G10 version I can already see the Micarta/REX 45 sprint! (Man, what a nice Patina a user- SPOON must develope in this tool steel!) :p :p / Yes, in all honesty, it ...

Re: Lil' Kapara!

We will! :) The spoon-thing is more than kind of you! But you don´t have to go that far: I´d like to suggest: Perhaps we can find common friendly ground in a CBBL - spoon? ;) / Very good points on the comp. lock in harsh conditions, even if I would not be your friend, but your foe, I´d have to admi...

Re: Lil' Kapara!

To be more precise I meant that small portion sticking out at the compression lock. This touches the index finger at closing. Now I see what you meant. The Kapara is different. See the picture (not my pic - borrowed from the KnifesShipFree website) https://i.postimg.cc/gJBCTH2q/spyderco-c241cfp-kap...

Re: Lil' Kapara!

Looking forward to! @jupaul @all Does the choil touch the finger at closing? As it does at lil native, ... It depends. If the finger is at the choil, the blade can't close. If you move it down but close to the choil, the blade touches the finger (but only the unsharpened part, so it is safe. If you...

Re: Lil' Kapara!

Your friend Wartstein is your friend indeed and by that only glad you like the comp. lock and never cut yourself!!! :) I do like the comp.lock too and it is undoubtedly great for purely keeping the fingers out of the blade path! For me it's just never been necessary at all (never cut myself with li...

If the comp lock had to be renamed clumsyproof lock could be a fair alternative :D

Re: Backpacker's Edge for a Spyderco: 15 or 20?

This reminds me of something I've been meaning to discuss. Might as well mention it here. When reprofiling knives I often aim for an asymmetric bevels. I started reprofiling knives for one reason in particular - wood carving. That is my use where edge angles make the biggest difference, so it has a...

OMG! There are people who have gone to jail for much less than that! I doubt your poor Caribbean can ever forgive you for what you've done to him.

I'm kidding. :D

I praise your bravery and imagination, but definitely not my cup of tea.

Re: Why did you join?

I tend to go deep when I get into a new interest. I have always liked knives, but had the opportunity a while back to pick up a couple better items. I like function over form, and see a point of diminishing returns. Spyderco, while having some nice form, are functional for me, at least the models I...
