I didn't had the chance to compare them directly, but I also noticed from photos that the tip might be even thinner than the one on the Military. BTW, nothing wrong with that.
I use soapy water on DMT diamond plates, on Spyderco ceramic stones, on Naniwa Chosera water stones etc etc. Water will catch particles and keep them in the slurry. Out in the field, use your saliva.. Problem (literally) solved.

As to the these sharpening videos, they are interesting. I wonder also, how much, if at all, does the grind direction come in to play? Which he mentions in the video.

Another vote for the Native and if it will get gross as you say, then definitely the Native, as it is easy to take apart and deep clean properly.
