Re: What do you want in a new Salt knife?
Hey Takuan, We found a organism in Hawaii that can live on a steel blade that looks like rust. As long as the blade was wet, it looked to be rusty. Let it dry and the "rust" dried up and fell off. Some of this "learning curve" is surprising. It was all pf the time we spent in Ha...

Re: What do you want in a new Salt knife?
Then we had galvanic reaction to the two steels being next to each other, even LC to LC. sal This is very interesting. I didn’t realize that galvanic corrosion could happen between identical metals. I appreciate all of the research and development that Spyderco has put into the Salt line. Living in...

Re: POLL: Return of the SpyderSaw? Single bladed or as part of a Dyad?
I voted for option 2 (a new SpyderSaw), but would also be interested in option 3 (the double-bladed version). I own two Bahco Laplander saws—one for my backpack and another for yard work—which I like because they offer a lot of cutting power in a small, lightweight package. I’d probably buy two Spyd...

Re: What do you want in a new Salt knife?
I would like to see a new, heavily modified version of the Tusk. The current Tusk looks wonderful, but I haven’t purchased one yet because (A) it only carries tip-down (which is a problem for me), (B) it has a very short blade (2.38 in), and (C) it costs far more than I can afford. I’d like to see a...

They ought to make a three-bladed model called the “Cerberus.”

Re: VG-10?
Dont forget... BladeHQ is there to sell you something. Most studies (Larrin for example) put VG10 above S30V for corrosion resistance, and very close to D2 for toughness and edge retention; BladeHQ rates VG10 the same as S30V and well below D2 in those categories. VG10 is a very respectable “genera...

Re: Needed More Space, Got A Spyderpak
I have a SpyderPac hanging in my closet next to my clothes. It makes it easy in the morning to pick out which knives I’ll be carrying that day. A man’s gotta accessorize! :)

Re: Pochi anticipation thread
I was somewhat surprised to see that it’s made in the Taichung factory rather than in the Seki City factory given the fact that the name Pochi (ポチ) is Japanese (derived from the English word, “pooch”) and the designer’s name “Kazuyuki” (和幸) appears in kanji on the reverse side of the blade. I guess ...

Re: VG-10?
Blade HQ has an interesting page where they rank knife steels according to their attributes: https://www.bladehq.com/cat--Best-Knife-Steel-Guide--3368#vg10 . VG-10 is a very well-balanced steel that doesn’t excel at anything in particular, but give a solid all-around performance for the average user...

Re: Why the Limited Selections on Fixed-Blades?
We've been told by many that the blade on the "Enuff" is already too thick. We're working on an "Enuff 2" with a longer and thinner blade. Why would you want such a thick spine on such a short blade? sal Will the Enuff 2 have a Salt model? I’ve really enjoyed carrying the Enuff ...

Re: Native 5: Signature Folder vs Lightweight ?
Thank you for the response, Spydergirl88 and Takuan. So the stainless steel liner + G10 handle accounts for the $45 price difference... That's rather steep! EDIT: Do amazon sellers really resell returned items as BRAND NEW?!? If so, I need to know... There are some secondary sellers on Amazon that ...

Re: Native 5: Signature Folder vs Lightweight ?
I own both of these knives. As others have said, the G10 version has two stainless steel liners and a steel back spacer, which blend seamlessly together due to excellent manufacturing tolerances. The G10 version is definitely heavier, but it is slightly stronger (due to the liners) and feels more li...

Re: New here & just bought 3 knives
Good choices! I own all three of those knives and I know that you’ve made three people very happy for years to come. My wife and my mother are both small women, and both carry Dragonflies that I’ve given them. It’s the best “little big knife” on the market. It’s big enough for serious work and yet s...

Re: Double Edged Finger Ring Fixed Blade
AKTI has some interesting information about the definitions of "dirk" and "dagger": https://www.akti.org/resources/akti-approved-knife-definitions/#dagger . Generally, if it looks "stabby" and it's double-edged, then it's either a dagger (if the blade is long) or a dirk...

Re: (Intro & Questions) Spyderco, I Choose YOU!
Get a bottle of Frog Lube for the pivot. Yes, the name sounds a bit silly, but it was apparently designed by a Navy frogman and it's bright green, so I suppose it's appropriate. It's food-safe (the main ingredients are wintergreen and coconut oil), it's a very effective machine lube (I use it on my ...

Re: Rex45=Hap40?
According to Spyderco’s steel comparison chart ( https://www.spyderco.com/edge-u-cation/steel-chart/ ), they do seem to have very similar chemistry in terms of carbon, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium. REX45 seems to have manganese, silicon, and sulfur, which are not included in...

Re: Rex45=Hap40?
Yes they are the same steel, a very common PM high speed steel in Europe especially. The European designation is 1.3244. It’s sold under a lot of trade names like ASP2030, S590, and Vanadis 30. Thanks, Larrin. I continue to learn a lot from your expertise (both here and on the Knife Steel Nerds web...
