Re: Which models bring out the best of each steel?

Personally, I feel “Super Steels” are mostly wasted on pocket knives used to cut sandwiches, peel fruit and open mail. A bit like putting a 18L V8 Turbo Diesel engine in a VW Beetle. Ah, hahaha! Just my $AU0.02c worth. :) Funny. When I was sharpening my s110v native the other day, I imagined ...

Re: Can we (civilly) discuss fixed blade prices?

Most (if not all?) of the fixed blades are designed by custom knife makers, and as with the folders that extra money is because of their name. It's not about cost, with these it is "name brand." It's the same reason why some people pay $80,000 for a single cab Chevrolet truck with a cover on the bac...

Re: Which models bring out the best of each steel?

I know this forum loves asking for each pattern to be available in every steel, but which patterns actually bring out the best in each steel? I.e. - Cruwear/4v manix - big, stout folder with a strong/tough steel Zdp-189/super blue Caly 3.5 - if it's not going to be tough, make it thin and slicey Th...

I've begged to make everything contoured but haven't had the most support. I'd have every knife I own like the Shaman if I could.
I never understood the drive to eliminate traction increasing features like texturing and jimping on very sharp objects.

Re: Official 2021 Discontinued List

The Bradley Bowie is tempting now. I figured K390 would kill off the ZDP-189. It's purely hype , in just about every practical sense ZDP-189 is more useful. It resists corrosion more, it sharpens on a wider array of abrasives, and it is still massively wear resistant. That's not true. K390 has way ...

I've not purchased new Spydercos in a couple of years...where do the Black Friday deals typically show up? Or are Spy knives typically not discounted?
Black Friday stopped with the price control. No more. Gotta feed the retailers.

Is the sharpmaker (with default stones) essentially useless on S110v? Thanks.
No, but if you are doing a full blown sharpening on a dull s110v, you will want a jig system.

Re: More 52100?

I will keep it short. I really liked 52100 steel. Its pretty much a good high carbon steel. Yes, I know it will stain, patina, and rust if you look at it wrong... but once you get a good patina on it, it holds up very well. I would love to see a medium sized, "general use/do it all" fixed blade in ...

Truly sad about the loss of ZDP-189. A great balanced steel with ridiculous edge holding.

At least we get to keep K390.
It does not appear to be completely discontinued. The endura and stretch remain.

Keep it. The dent prevents accidental disengagement of the lock during a tight hammer grip.

Re: Powerlock Manix XL

No, don't really see the point. The ball bearing lock is perhaps Spyderco's most secure lock, which is probably why it is featured in the tank-built Manix.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Re: D2/K110 pros/cons in 2020?

I like D2 in some knives but I don't think it's much more than nostalgia for me. If I really want a knife now it will have something that really out performs D2. There are a bunch of steels in use that have higher toughness, wear and corrosion resistance all combined in one steel which IMO is the r...

Spyderco has never warmed up to d2/k110, even in cpm form. Why is that? Is it because in 2020, other steels do the toothy high edge retention thing better for similar cost?

Re: Discontinued List 2021 Speculation Thread

Forget about the discontinued list for 2020, let's talk about the price increase for 2021 :D That's actually a good question. Is it an annual thing now? The original justification was that the price control was being used to combat Amazon and Ebay, understandably, but they've been in compliance for...

I've been thinking about the Manix series a lot the past few weeks. 4 - The handle jimping needs to go. 6 - I would like the thumb ramp design to go back to the more mellow angle of the C95. See this photo for reference . Having used both side by side I find the C95 thumb ramp more ergonomic than t...
