The huge gap between the lock bar and the scale really bothers me for some reason. The Drunken and a few other models also have a wide gap, as does the Lionsteel Myto. I don’t understand the purpose of cutting them like that, especially when I’ve seen other models from Spyderco and other manufactur...

XHP is my least favorite good steel, but I really like a couple models that use it: https://i.ibb.co/MkJscx0/20240424-151418.jpg I don't feel like either is lacking in any way because of the XHP, but I'd probably enjoy both even more if any other semi-modern steel was used. I've had the exact opposite experience, but I also reprofiled mine out of the box.

I got some pretty severe chipping in my SE bd1n p3lw, but I've used my SE k390 Endura a whole lot harder and haven't seen any chipping at all.

Sharpen to a polished edge, then apply a coarse microbevel?

I've been doing that for years with my K2 (~10dps main bevel, ~15dps micro). I've tested a ton of different kinds of edges on it, and that's the one that both cuts and looks best (subjective, of course) and lasts longest.
