Re: Show your Mule
Hey Sal,
This stuff is called C-Tek Honeycomb Composite. It is an aluminum honeycomb filled with composite resin. It mills pretty easily but is a bit finicky to final sand due to the different hardness of the aluminum and the resin.
Regards,
Mike.

Re: Show your Mule
Man, those Micarta scales look good Ramonade Clean lines there. I've been making so many wooden scales recently I wanted to try something different. These are aluminum honeycomb filled with dyed resin. I think these are my new favorite scales. The way the aluminum honeycomb reflects the light in dif...

Re: Show your Mule
Took some of my Mules for a hike today. They got to ride in their cozy new sheaths and the new messenger bag I am almost done making. The snow is melting and the ice is off the lower lakes. I also got to test out my new HIC Mule s bit. I still can't get it as sharp as steel but it cuts apples well a...

Re: Show your Mule
Worked up some canvas micarta 2 toned scales along with a batch of sheaths to carry a few of my Mules. Next up, another batch of 6 more sheaths in another color for some of my other Mules.

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
Ok, my HIC finally arrived bit I think the boys at the border took their time figuring out what this one was. My box was a bit mangled and the HIC Mule was out of its bag inside the box when it arrived. It had been opened and taped up with CBSA border inspection tape. Either way, it arrived and the ...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
Unfortunately I do not have access to a BESS tester, but might be willing to get one soon. Recently I built a guided sharpening system for my 2x72 that operates similar to a Tormek, and might start offering sharpening services to some friends that are professional chefs. I were to do that I’d like ...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
Man, you guys are killing me here. I'm still patiently (mostly) sitting on my hands waiting for my HIC to get here. I've watched so many threads and conversations about sharpening this beast and my hands are just itching waiting for mine to get here. I milled up a set of black and blue micarta scale...

Re: T15 Testing and Pondering About CATRA (BESS Data Included)
Great testing, and I have to agree, I love initial sharpness retention. The kind of sharpness that whatever you cut just seems to fall apart in two pieces without any effort. That is what I want for my edc knives. The ones that do light duty work a few times a day and can easily be stropped or a few...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
This is really helpful. I only have aluminum oxide sanding belts that go from 800 grit to 1500 grit. I was going to hand sharpen my mule on some DMT benchstones, but given what I'm hearing I think maybe I'll try some diamond stropping paste on a 1x30 belt sander and see if that works instead of spe...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
The 1000 grit belt I used is a Silicon Carbide belt from Red Label Abrasives. It came as part of a sharpening belt set that they sell on Amazon. For $30 you get six belts (two of each 600, 800, and 1000). I’ve had them for years and honestly haven’t used them much because I tend to do my initial gr...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
This evening I got the chance to play around on my grinder a bit more and it has me feeling good about grinding this material for when I need to put a whole new edge on this thing. I decided to work the spine of the knife on the contact wheel using a 1000 grit belt just to see how it grinds. The re...

Mahogany Mule Scales too. When I first started these ones I thought, "This Mahogany Is beautiful, why don't more people make Scales with it?" Half way through I thought, "Man, this stuff is a pain to work with, tearout, fuzzing, hard on tools. No wonder no one makes scales out of it.&...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
What did the factory use to sharpen these? They sharpen by hand using 600 grit diamond. I haven't heard the exact material or tool they are using. My plan is to try a linen belt loaded with diamond compound on the 2x72 with a rubber contact wheel. I’ve never sharpened anything like this but if this...
