Southard upgrade
If anyone was curious as to whether the Skiff bearings improve the Southard my answer is an emphatic yes. I believe mine was an early run before some of the improvements. Great lockup but had to light switch just right to get it to deploy, and it was completely motionless when disengaging the lock. ...

Re: My first Spyderco - Spydiechef - QC questions
Dear tonythetigerx2: From an engineering standpoint, the contact point engagement between the lock bar and the tang ramp should be focused on an area about .090-.125. That's according to Bob Terzuola's book "The Tactical Folding Knife," current edition, page 97. An excessive contact area ...

Re: Warranty Failures
Had vertical blade play on my Spydiechef about a year ago, posted about it here and was encouraged to send it in for warranty, when I was only posting to ask if I should try to carbidize the lock face to reduce the play. I sent it in, and they told me it was within spec. So despite obvious, substant...

The Spydiechef definitely is not.

Re: Caly 3.5 Owners, How much have you sharpened away?
My native ended up with the tip exposed after admittedly over sharpening. My Caly 3.5 seems sufficiently buried, despite also over sharpening. On my native I did grind down the kick with a dremel and that fixed it.

Re: Warranty woes
My experience with my Spydiechef has made me discount any help from the warranties department all together. So I factor in caveat emptor when considering any Spyderco now. Which given the current pricing means I basically no longer consider spyderco unless presented with a good price on the secondar...

Re: 1 year of keto dieting results
Congrats OP. I started it this past May, am down 75 right now. Though started around 400, so long way to go still. But yes, if you can get your mind around it this is doable. Just have to look at food less as an opportunity for hedonistic joy and more as part of the job to fuel your day.

Re: Lock rock
Just sent the knife back, no further contact. I still have not acquired the setup to carbidize, and just have tried peening yet. For now I’m resigned to just not reaching for it often.
Compressing the existing metal to flow in the direction it needs to fill the gap. Don't know if it's helpful, but here's some diy discussion on carbiding. https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/carbidizer-diy.1645059/
How would this be done? Carefully use a hammer and try to push in t...

Re: Lock rock
Well I went to check mine and immediately cut myself. But anyways, mine is fine. 65% lockup, no gap, no lockrock. I know my opinion doesnt matter but in my opinion your knife isnt within spec. How could it be? Any framelock that allows for lockrock, and has a gap between the lockbar and blade tang ...

Re: Lock rock
Do you kmow someone who does this or going to diy? Maybe it can be layered on. Personally, I would probably opt to peen the lockbar. I've done this to a few liner locks that turned out good. A titanium framelock being much thicker and softer, should be easier. Must say I don’t know what peening in ...

Re: Lock rock
Mine was like this when I got it as far as the percentage goes. I don’t know for certain about the lock rock because I only noticed it this month. Suppose I need to inspect more closely. I suspect it came this way.

Re: Lock rock
I'd send a knife back if there was no appreciable detent. On my Spidiechef I have to give is such a hard NYC shake if they saw me I'd be promoted directly to Chief Detective. For the other guy probably pushing the lockbar all the way over had something to do with that call. Yes observing a flaw in ...

Re: Lock rock
It’s a gap between the lock bar and tang while engaged. Big enough for it to travel up and down and click. I don’t think there’s much risk of it slipping given how far over the lock is on the tang. More likely to drive into the opposite scale than disengage. I’m hoping carbidizing can add enough mat...

Re: Lock rock
Also, sorry for the deluge of posts, but for transparency sake the person on the phone did tell me that they put it through their safety tests and it passed so there’s that. He also said they referred it to the R and D department after warranties determined it was fine, and they concurred. So this s...

Re: Lock rock
I really don’t see the point. I’m sure the knife is on its way back to me at this point or will be shortly. I didn’t come on here to flame Spyderco. I came on here to see if anybody had any support for the idea of carbidizing to solve this. I was convinced that the warranty department would take car...

Re: Lock rock
My Southard is a bank vault. I’m sure other frame locks from them are fine, but I was just expressly told by a representative of the company that lock rock is within spec and acceptable. Why would I spend more money with a company that told me that when other companies do better for less? At this po...
