Re: The "factory edge" discourse
Here in the 21st Century, we have the ability to control temperatures during machining operations. Sal says they use coolant during their sharpening processes. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that maybe "burnt knife edges" aren't as big of a problem as the "social infl...

Re: "Scope The Edge" Ideas and Participants List
I apologize for my late entry into the discussion, but here it goes: For some time now, I’ve been convinced that edge-leading strokes on the sharpening stones are best because it minimizes burr formation. I recently watched a YouTube video, however, where the fella explained that if done right, a s...

Re: CPM MagnaCut | Edge Performance
Dr. Larrin can surely speak for himself, but I do not recall him poo pooing M390 or its equivalents. He recommended it at one time, but roughly a year ago switched the recommendation to S90V over M390 if you are looking for stainless with edge retention balance. Again, never poo pooed M390. MagnaCu...

Re: Will there be a MagnaCut backlash?
I've been lucky enough to have a Magnacut test blade sent to me from Brian at Transparent Knives. There's a lot of hype around it, but I think it's important to remember that MC won't excel at any one thing. But that's why it's special. No other steel currently available has the level/balance of pro...

Re: CPM REX 45 | Edge Performance
Screen Shot 2021-10-20 at 12.19.50 PM.jpg It looks like high hardness is all Rex 45 has over M4. The better toughness of M4 with very similar edge retention is an appealing combination. However, M4 has pitted on me and Rex 45 has not yet done that in my use. That's not exactly a perfect comparison ...

Re: CPM REX 45 | Edge Performance
PM2 and Chief, KME diamond at 15DPS with a 1500 grit finish, deburr with my thumb. I've never had any significant chips or rolls, with 3+ years of use. I've cut hardwood, cable ties, small gauge copper wire, scraped paint off aluminum surfaces, etc. I am firmly *against* any lowering of the Rex 45 ...

Re: GP Knives Exclusive Para 3 LW: Rex45, White FRN
I wish this were a Delica or Straight Spine Stretch. I'd be all over it. The P3 is not the knife for me. Ah! I'm a poet and I know it. A rhyme every time. I tend to agree, I was more interested in Rex45 before the quantitative testing of it came out, and folks were saying it was a fairly tough stee...

Re: If you are NEW to sharpening, or having DIFFICULTY, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS THREAD
Great thread Shawn. Seeing this kinda stuff up close is invaluable to learning how you can improve. Here's a few of my most recent... K390 Endura after some use and stropped back to hair whittling. Original progression was 200, 600, 1000 plated diamond followed by 1200 grit Venev OCB and then 1/0.1 ...

Re: Affording the Necessary Stones for Super Steels
Not this (aluminum oxide): You'll definitely want all diamond/CBN stones if you're trying to avoid this. Diamond/CBN shape the carbides (the off colored circles) rather than erode the matrix around them like this picture. Anything other than diamond/CBN will not be hard enough to shape carbides. Yo...

Re: K390 vs Maxamet
You definitely can, but then you're missing out on the capability of diamond/CBN to properly cut/abrade the carbides. Ceramic leaves those carbides fully intact at the apex which makes it kinda chunky and coarse. An apex with a full diamond/CBN progression is much more crisp and will last longer. I...

Re: K390 vs Maxamet
Yep, that’s what I do (I load my strops with cbn but that’s equivalent) 😭 I will say I’ve had less trouble deburring on the Spyderco UF, but it sounds like BBB is saying it’d be better not to use that at all with certain steels. I think it is okay to do the work with diamonds and only clean up the ...

Re: K390 vs Maxamet
I appreciate the reply! If you’ve got the time I’d love any tips on deburring in general. I can do it but it takes far more time, energy and frustration than it should. Light, edge trailing motion on the Spyderco UF and a diamond loaded leather strop should do it. Yep, that’s what I do (I load my s...

Re: S110V doesn't "feel" sharp
My problem with the WE is that the stone options are limited. No access to all the wonderful new bonded CBN and Diamond stones now on the market. I like the edge pro professional for fixed system sharpening since there is no clamp to fiddle with and the stone options are so vast. I'm nowhere near y...

Re: S110V doesn't "feel" sharp
What's your thoughts on the wicked edge? I've been thinking about picking up the V3 Pro, buy once, cry once kind of a thing. I love mine. I've got the WE130 model, bought it used with some extras for a really good price. It's fantastic. I cannot stress enough how much of a game changer it is to be ...

Re: Can I sharpen steel x with a Sharpmaker? The answer is yes!
Can you? Absolutely! Will you be missing some of the performance though vs if you went with a full diamond/CBN progression? Yes. Most won't be able to tell a difference though. But if you're a performance aficionado, that's something to keep in mind.

Re: Maxamet or S110V?
I'll go out on a limb and say maxamet blades are 7-8 hrc points harder than s110v, which means magnitudes stronger, and still possibly tougher. Come on, Jack! No way you can tell the difference between these two in random usage. Both are extremely, extremely, e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y hard to grind! Depend...
