Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
https://youtu.be/Y68yJfGDVg4 That pretty much sums it up. LTK and the people in his group are doing a huge service to the community. No one is claiming HRC is everything. Like LTK said, you CAN have bad cut tests results with high hardness. But acting like HRC is irrelevant is beyond disingenuous. ...

Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
K Knives Switzerland has taken it to 64. I think Shawn might have, as well.
60-62 is a range a lot of people would be very happy with in production.

Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
The above 8 pages of discussion show why we would prefer not to list Rc. If someone has a particular question on a particular model, I'll usually test it and give the results, but as discussed, there is much more involved. sal For what it’s worth, I get why it makes sense for you to have that posit...

Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
Well, here's some test results from long ago. http://www.cliffstamp.com/knives/reviews/CATRA.html If you notice, the Bohler CATRA edge retention test result for M-390 is 959 TTC (total cards cut) at "61+" Rockwell C Hardness. Where have we heard that number before ? 61.xx HRC ? Gets aroun...

Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
I’m going to disagree, because our goal is to determine patterns that are predictable and repeatable, in the form of ranges, *despite* the variables.
If I can predict and replicate a range 100 or 1,000 times, then I’m willing to leverage that pattern to make a non-critical decision.

Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
Am I understanding correctly that you’re saying that: Same composition higher hrc Same secondary edge angle Consistently out performing Same composition Same secondary edge angle Lower hrc To a point where I can predict that it will happen again, and replicate it Despite Cardboard variability Differ...

Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
Not really sure how or why this focus on HRC has become THAT thing. Goes back to what I said before, as the old saying goes..... "Numbers are the devils playground." ;) If a knife performs well and or does what it's supposed to do then it's a good knife. There are many factors that effect...

Well that's not Nick Shabazz. Let's try this. https://youtu.be/6lXNLzru8XU Note: Nick reached out to Kurt/jcoolg19 before posting the video, and subsequently confirmed via IG and YT comments, as well as directly to me, that the video was not directed at us as a group, and was specifically trying to...

CQI Domino with a little tweaking to the pivot. No change to steel, no change to grind, etc. Just tweak the pivot. Done.

Re: CTS-XHP Thread
My XHP experience has been entirely with Spyderco models. I own a blue weave Domino and a Cutlery Shoppe exclusive Para 3 in it, and had a Chaparral here for awhile for review. I cut a lot at work. About 3/5 days a week, it’s normal for me to do over 100 feet of cardboard, 30-50 zip ties, 20-40 plas...

Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
Cardboard really isn't that great of a media to use, it varies greatly. Manila rope is MUCH better and more stable and consistent. But then you said you are looking for a range and not exact numbers so it's fine to get a general idea. I wouldn't put too much stock in the results using that method h...

Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
I’m very interested in predictable, and repeatable information. With that... my friend Gerald at Outpost76 does edge retention tests cutting cardboard. He uses a set progression for sharpening, tapes off a 1” section to concentrate the test, and cuts until a catch or dulling causes the knife to stop...

Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
The “variables” piece has been a stop sign talking point for years, but the mechanism for it has effectively been, “X factor matters less than Y and Z, so forget about X.” The problem there is that X, Y, and Z -> best result. Also, nobody, at all, is suggesting that X is a greater factor than Y or ...

re: a knife dulling in 35 feet when properly sharpened— it was sharpened by a very experienced sharpener, for testing, using the same progression he uses for every test, and got about 9% as far as M390 tested at 62hrc. Re: "HRC as advertised." Who is accurately listing HRC?
There is a massive difference in commercial HTing and a custom maker doing one or 2 blades at a time. IT IS MASSIVE NOBODY CAN hit HRC numbers exact 100% of the time, too many variables involved for that to happen. Anyone that tells you different..... Well... ;) Not too many aerospace level furnace...

I’m pleasantly surprised with the way the conversation has evolved on this forum. Much more consistently level headed than I expected. Thank you to everyone for the ways you’ve each participated.
